São Tomé and Príncipe, a remote archipelago off the coast of West Africa, might be the most beautiful island nation you’ve never heard of. One of the least-visited countries in the world and least-populous in Africa, its pristine beaches and verdant jungle ecosystem have been compared to an Eden on earth.
Now, international visitors can make a permanent move to paradise via its new “golden passport” program. São Tomé and Príncipe first announced the citizenship-by-investment scheme in August 2025 with the goal of raising funds to support the local economy, which currently relies heavily on cocoa exports and foreign aid.
The government offers citizenship in exchange for a one-time $90,000 investment in its National Transformation Fund (plus an additional $5,750 fee). For an additional $5,000 investment, applicants can also bring three family members—such as a spouse, children under 30, or parents and grandparents over 55. An extra $5,000 is required for each family member beyond the first three. And unlike other golden passport programs, applicants aren’t required to permanently relocate to the archipelago for an allotted period of time or purchase real estate there.
São Tomé and Príncipe’s golden passport is also one of the quickest to obtain. The nation received 98 applications in the first five months of the program’s launch, according to Immigrant Invest, a citizenship and residency consulting firm that works with the country. During that time, 27 received approval, with an average processing time of two-and-a-half months. And in January 2026, the country issued its first golden passport.
For travelers, it’s a great way to obtain dual citizenship in under a year. For the island country, it’s an opportunity to improve quality of life for locals: The National Transformation Fund allocates resources to local sectors such as education, health, and infrastructure; current projects include the construction of a deep-sea port and renewable energy infrastructure.
Having gained independence from Portugal in 1975, the islands’ national language is Portuguese. With that comes a major benefit for travelers: São Tomé and Príncipe is a member of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP), which streamlines the process for citizens to reside, study, or work in other affiliated countries, including Portugal and Brazil.
Other perks of being a São Tomé and Príncipe citizen? The nation’s ongoing investments in eco-tourism make it a top destination for travelers seeking pristine and protected natural environments. And its democratically elected, multi-party government makes it a solid option for folks looking to relocate to a politically stable country. That said, there are some inconveniences around living on a remote island. The only direct flights to the islands are from Lisbon, Angola, and Accra, Ghana. There are also infrastructural considerations: Extended power outages are common, and water supplies and healthcare are inconsistent beyond the capital city of São Tomé, Immigrant Invest notes.
If you’re interested in applying, you’ll need to first contact one of the program’s official “Marketing Agents,” several of whom are US-based. Be sure to prepare documents such as proof of funds and criminal record certificates. Note that if you have more than three active citizenships, you will be disqualified.
At the end of the day, São Tomé and Príncipe’s golden passport is a relatively affordable option with solid perks and a streamlined application process. Greece and Portugal’s residency-by-investment plans, for example, both require a 250,000 euros (about $284,650) investment—Greece’s can lead to citizenship after seven years; Portugal’s, after five.
