It looks like a beach buggy with an open top and has a bed like a pickup truck. The Renault 4 JP4x4 concept is a “chick and modern beach car” with an all-electric AWD powertrain.

Meet the Renault 4 JP4X4 beach car EV concept

Now this is the beach buggy we deserve. Renault unveiled the JP4x4 Concept on Tuesday at the 2026 Roland-Garros French Open, a tribute to the original JP4.

With an electric powertrain, the JP4x4 is “a chic and modern beach car,” Renault said at the event. It also adds a touch of adventure with a dual-motor, four-wheel drive setup.

The “Beach Adventurer,” as the company calls it, is the fourth concept following the FL4WER POWER, Savane 4×4, and Vision Rescue, based on the Renault 4 E-Tech platform. Like the first two vehicles, the JP4x4 was showcased in pealescent Emerald Green, a modern take on its original exterior colors from the 70s and 80s.

Described as an “adventurer with an open-air feel,” the concept features two minimalist doors and a drop-top tailgate that opens up the pickup truck bed.

Inside, the vehicle has bucket seats reminiscent of the “Egyptian Mummy” seats that were a signature in Renault models from the 70s.

The door panels, trunk (or pickup bed), and dashboard are covered with a textile finish, while added grab handles are included on the dash and passenger side for when things get bumpy. Meanwhile, the floating center infotainment display is an “original feature,” Renault said, giving it a modern, high-tech feel.

Renault added the JP4 logo on the central outer pillar and “4×4” badges on the front and rear panels in tribute to the original model.

The JP4x4 concept is based on the same platform as the Renault 4, but it has 15 mm of additional ground clearance compared to the standard version.

It also keeps the 18″ wheel size with special Goodyear UltraGrip Performance+ 225/55 tires and JP4 wheels, but the front and rear tracks are 10 mm wider on both sides.

Will we see a production version? Renault has yet to confirm it, but said the beach car concept shows “the potential of the RGEV small platform to create a B-segment EV with four-wheel drive” with a second electric motor mounted on the rear axle.

What do you think of the Beach Adventurer? Would you buy one if it went on sale? Let us know in the comments. For those in the US, don’t get your hopes up. Renault sold its last vehicle in the US over three decades ago and is unlikely to return anytime soon, given the Trump Administration’s tariffs on imports.
