SAIC launched its first electric SUV powered by a semi-solid-state EV battery in China, starting at under $15,000.

After launching the new MG 4 last year, or the “world’s first mass-produced semi-solid-state EV,” as the Chinese automaker calls it, SAIC is following it up with its first electric SUV under the new series.

SAIC officially launched the MG 4X in China on Wednesday, starting at just 99,800 yuan ($14,700), matching the price of blind preorders that opened earlier this month. For a limited time, the MG 4X can be bought for as low as 92,800 yuan ($13,700) with incentives.

The electric SUV is available with two battery pack options from “top-tier” battery suppliers, including a 53.9 kWh semi-solid-state battery from SAIC Qingtao and a 64.2 kWh LFP (lithium iron phosphate ) CATL battery.

The semi-solid-state (53.9 kWh) battery offers a CLTC range of up to 510 km (317 miles), while the larger (64.2 kWh) CATL LFP battery delivers up to 610 km (379 miles).

While the base model is equipped with a 125 kW (167 hp) rear-mounted electric motor, higher-priced versions gain a more powerful 150 kW (201 hp) motor.

The MG 4X measures 4,500 mm in length, 1,849 mm in width, and 1,621 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 2,735 mm, or about the size of the BYD Yuan Plus (sold as the Atto 3 overseas).

Like the new MG 4, the electric SUV features SAIC’s new intelligent cockpit design with a large 15.6″ floating central infotainment screen and a smaller 10.25″ driver display. The setup includes Horizon L2 intelligent assisted driving, offering ADAS features including high-speed NOA and all-scenario remote parking.

SAIC teamed up with smartphone maker Oppo to offer full in-car connectivity, providing access to CarPlay, HiCar, and more directly from the driver’s smartphone.

The new MG 4X is offered in Free and Smart Editions, offering various safety and convenience features. The entry-level Free models are equipped with 5 cameras and 8 ultrasonic radars, while the Smart Edition models feature a more advanced setup with 21 smart sensors in total.

SAIC claimed that reducing the liquid electrolyte content to just 5% significantly reduces the risk of combustion and improves the cycle life in the semi-solid-state EV battery.

The battery underwent two needle penetration tests, producing no smoke, fires, or explosions after two hours, which SAIC MG said was an industry first and exceeded industry standards by 20%.

While SAIC’s electric SUV is now on sale in China, the company is bringing its semi-solid-state EV batteries, MG SolidCore Battery, to Europe in 2026.

The new MG4 EV Urban will go on sale in Europe with the same battery, but under WLTP conditions, the driving range will likely fall to around 400 km (248 miles).

The new battery tech unlocks longer driver ranges, faster charging speeds, enhanced safety, and improved performance in cold weather. According to SAIC, the semi-solid-state batteries have been “refined to accommodate regional road conditions, climate variations, and regulatory requirements.”
