Fans lauded goalkeeper Patrick Beach for his impressive performance in Australia’s opening game of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The shotstopper made important saves and kept a clean sheet in a 2-0 win over Turkiye (June 13).

Aussie coach Tony Popovic surprised one and all by dropping Matt Ryan, who has 104 caps for the nation and is their captain, in favour of the young Beach. However, the 22-year-old, making just his third international appearance, repaid his coach’s faith in full.

Beach made eight saves, preventing a total of 1.54 expected goals from the Turkiye attackers (stats via FotMob). After the full-time whistle, fans took to social media to lavish praise on the young star’s performance.

    One fan hilariously exclaimed:

“Is Pat Beach the second coming of Jesus Christ?”

    Another fan asserted:

“My MOTM for the Australia game was Patrick Beach. He took the spot of vet and legend Matt Ryan & BALLED OUT! Very impressive.”

Another fan agreed with the previous one’s sentiment:

“Patrick Beach over Matt Ryan has been a masterstroke so far from Australia.”

One fan claimed that Beach performed like a regular starter despite being considered by many as the third-choice keeper. They wrote:

“Patrick Beach was listed by many as third choice keeper for Australia – huge surprise he started but he’s played a blinder so far.”

A Chelsea fan urged his club to look into signing Beach, writing:

“Chelsea fans been saying there are no good keepers in the market rn. Are you lot watching Australia’s Patrick Beach putting on a masterclass?”

Despite being a Brazil fan, a user had to give Beach his flowers. He wrote:

“Bro shout out Patrick Beach, that guy defended the goal like his life depended on it.”

One supporter went so far as to claim:

“Patrick Beach Player of the Tournament so far. Can’t believe what im witnessing.”

The remaining opponents for the Socceroos in Group D of the 2026 FIFA World Cup are the USA (June 19) and Paraguay (June 25).

The 2-0 win over Turkiye was just the fifth ever FIFA World Cup victory for Australia

Despite being one of the strongest nations in the Oceania region, Australia were never a regular presence at the FIFA World Cup before 2006.

While they were always head and shoulders clear of the competition in the Oceania Football Confederation (OFC), FIFA never handed them a guaranteed spot at the World Cup. The winner of the Oceania zone receives just half a qualification slot; subsequently, they always have to go through the inter-continental play-offs to qualify.

The Aussies made it to the World Cup through the play-offs in 1974, but failed to win a single game at the tournament. They went on to miss seven straight editions of the competition after that, prompting them to switch to the Asian Football Confederation (AFC).

Since the switch in 2006, the Socceroos have qualified for every FIFA World Cup. Their best result at the tournament came in ’06 and in 2022, reaching the Round of 16 on both occasions.

At the 2026 tournament, Australia kicked things off in style with a win over Turkiye in their opener (June 13). A pair of scintillating strikes from Nestory Irankunda (27′) and Connor Metcalfe (75′) and a defiant performance from goalkeeper Patrick Beach secured a 2-0 win for Tony Popovic’s side.

The win equalled their highest ever margin of victory in a FIFA World Cup fixture, tied with their 3-1 triumph over Japan in 2006.
