The It-Girl Travel Shoe of Summer Is Under $100 and Packs Flat In a Suitcase

A brief history of the Puma Speedcat

The Speedcat actually started out in the high-stakes world of Formula One back in 1999. On the track, everything about the design was pure function. Drivers needed a super-thin sole to feel the pedals, a rounded heel to pivot smoothly around sharp European switchbacks, and a tight suede fit. Puma stripped down the fireproof boots they made for professional drivers, and brought its reimagined design to the streets via sneaker a year later, in 2000. They instantly became the ultimate cosmopolitan style statement—and if you walked through the cafes of Milan or the streets of Tokyo in the early 2000s, you saw these bad boys everywhere.

The Speedcats became a total staple for backpackers and city-hoppers alike—after all, they looked just as right with low-rise jeans and a leather jacket as they did packed away in a weekend duffel. The coolest part? When the rest of the sneaker world went totally wild for chunky, oversized “dad shoes,” the Speedcat just stayed in its lane. It didn’t try to reinvent itself every two seconds, which is exactly why it kept its effortless, cool indie credibility for over 20 years.

Today, there is a refreshed appeal in shoes that feel lighter, cleaner, and quieter in an outfit. Alas, enter ballet-core: a movement driven by several seasons of fashion shifting away from chunky soles and oversized proportions in favor of slimmer, lower-profile footwear. As ballet flats return and vintage-inspired sneakers dominate, the aesthetic is evolving into a broader appetite for footwear that balances style with genuine practicality and use. Take the industry’s recent push for the “sneakerina,” for example, with brands like Free People, Vivaia, Farm Rio, and Adidas (just to name a few), all upping the ante in the ballet-infused-sneaker game.

The Speedcat Ballet fits neatly into these trends, but unlike many newer interpretations, it arrives with more than two decades of history behind it. Its appeal isn’t built on novelty, but rather a design that has stayed true in its supportive, athletic-inspired essence.

Why I love them for travel

The Speedcat Ballet flats are one of the most packable shoes I own, taking up little space and weight in a carry-on—far less than any lightweight sneaker in my closet. I brought both my red and cheetah print pair on recent trips to Puerto Rico, Miami, and the Hudson Valley, and was able to fold one into the other and tuck them neatly into a corner of my bag. Even after being packed away in an overstuffed duffel or suitcase, these flats hold their shape surprisingly well, making them a great option when I’m trying to pack light.

They’re also one of the best airport shoes I’ve worn in recent years. I typically wear them with a thin, no-show sock when I’m traveling. But for everyday errands, I’ll often throw them on without socks altogether. They’re easy to slip on and off, lightweight enough for long travel days, and airy enough that they never feel bulky or restrictive, even in warmer weather. At the same time, they (refreshingly) don’t sacrifice support, and I’ve found that many shoes in the sneakers category feel more like ballet flats than actual sneakers. With the Speedcats, I can feel the sneaker heritage in the build, and more grip and stability than any similar shoes I’ve tried in recent years have offered.
