Dutton Ranch Season 1 Episode 4 Recap: An infected bull, a family tragedy, and questions about Beulah’s empire
The latest chapter of the saga brings a tragedy that changes everything. In Dutton Ranch Season 1 Episode 4, a truly horrifying sequence unfolds on the family ranch. The previous hope of saving the Black Angus herd evaporates completely. The disease spreads beyond control, forcing Rip to make a decision that will likely haunt him forever.
Away from the crisis, Beth Dutton stumbles upon a surprise involving Carter and Oreana Jackson. Expecting to find her adopted son asleep, Beth instead discovers him spending the night with Oreana. She offers to drive Oreana home herself, using the trip to learn more about the girl who has captured Carter’s attention.
Although Oreana appears different from her grandmother, Beulah Jackson, Beth remains cautious. Meanwhile, Beulah responds by grounding Oreana and taking away her credit cards after learning about her behavior. Dutton Ranch Season 1 Episode 4 also sheds light on Everett McKinney’s troubled past.
Beulah tricks the town veterinarian into visiting her estate by inventing a medical emergency involving a pregnant mare. The plan works. However, their reunion turns emotional. Their conversation clarifies that both carry deep wounds from years ago. McKinney recalls a child named Levi and speaks of a tire swing he could never remove after the boy’s death. The scene hints that grief destroyed whatever relationship once existed between him and Beulah.
Meanwhile, Carter faces struggles of his own. School feels unfamiliar to him, and he seems to have trouble making friends there. Though Beth and Rip want him to enjoy a normal teenage life, Carter still feels more connected to ranch work than classroom lessons.
He skips school out of frustration and finds temporary work with an older rancher named Dwight, with whom he quickly bonds. Dwight tells Carter that real lessons come from experience, not textbooks. Later, he reveals a caged African leopard named Xena hidden on his property. This finding raises serious questions. Dwight’s story sounds suspicious, and he may be involved in illegal wildlife trafficking.
On the other hand, Rip faces his darkest hour in Dutton Ranch Season 1 Episode 4. He realizes that the infected cattle can no longer be saved. The virus has spread throughout the herd. There is no cure or miracle. Rip, Zach, and Azul prepare a massive burial site before leading the animals toward it.
Rip puts them down one by one. The worst decision comes at last. The calf he once rescued from a deadly fire is infected too. With heartbreaking reluctance, Rip pulls the trigger and ends its suffering.
As Dutton Ranch Season 1 Episode 4 continues, Beth begins investigating how the outbreak started. The points toward a new bull Rip purchased at auction. Documents linked to the animal appear fraudulent, and veterinarian Dr. Poole denies ever examining it.
Although cattle broker J.R. Simon sold the bull, Beth suspects he may only be a middleman. Her attention shifts toward larger players, including Joaquin Reyes and possibly even Beulah Jackson, both of whom could have benefited from the Duttons’ loss.
Another major thread in the episode focuses on Beulah’s future. She appears exhausted by the responsibilities of her empire and hints at retirement. Joaquin offers to take control, but Beulah hesitates. Despite his loyalty and capability, she seems unwilling to hand everything over to someone who is not related to her by blood.
Instead, she appears to favor Oreana as her eventual successor. The ending of Dutton Ranch Season 1 Episode 4 leaves several questions unanswered. It remains unclear whether every animal was infected or if part of the herd survived quarantine.
If the Duttons have truly lost all their prized Black Angus cattle, rebuilding their ranch will require enormous sacrifice. Beth may need financial help, and that could place her in the uncomfortable position of dealing directly with Beulah. At the same time, Carter’s growing friendship with Dwight and Oreana’s strict punishment suggest new troubles are waiting just around the corner.
By the time Dutton Ranch Season 1 Episode 4 ends, Rip and Beth have lost more than just cattle. They have lost years of work, countless dreams, and the future they were trying to build. Yet if there is one thing the Duttons never do, it is quit. Their next fight is only beginning.
