Tesla Is Giving Away Free Supercharging. Here’s How To Win.

    • Tesla is giving away free Supercharging.
    • The catch? Only nine people across the world will get it.
    • Owners will qualify by competing for the top-three spot in unique charging-related feats.

Tesla has been gamifying vehicle ownership for a while now. If you have Tesla Insurance, safety scores influence how you drive. Or if you have Full Self-Driving, mileage streaks encourage you to engage the driver-assistance feature. Now the company is adding Supercharging into the mix.

The automaker has announced its “2026 Free Supercharging Competition” where nine owners can earn free Supercharging for as long as their own their car.

Basically, Tesla is looking for folks to earn achievements as they go about their daily lives. That means earnings streaks, visiting new places, and consuming electricity like the data center on wheels that Elon Musk wants every Tesla to become. Drivers who top the ranks in three different categories will be awarded free Supercharging for the lifetime of their car.

The first way to win—the streak method—is simply to have the longest trip. Tesla classifies this as chaining together unique Supercharging locations within 24 hours of the last stop. A car must stop at a new location in order to reset the 24-hour timer. Repeat stops are allowed, but you must visit a new, unique location in order to keep the streak going.

The second way to win is to visit the most unique Supercharging locations in 2026. This one feels almost like it runs in tandem with the streak, however, it allows for a bit more flexibility since it doesn’t require visiting a new site within 24 hours.

Currently, Tesla has 2,997 unique Supercharging locations nationwide, according to the U.S. Department of Energy (about 20% of all DC fast charging locations across all networks). So as of the time of writing, that’s the highest number of locations anybody could theoretically visit.

Lastly, the owner who consumes the highest total kilowatt-hours of energy from Tesla Superchargers this year will also win free charging.

Owners who currently have free Supercharging, use their cars for ride sharing or delivery purposes, and Tesla employees (and their families) are ineligible to win. Three winners will be selected from each participating region: North and South America; Asia-Pacific and Oceania (except for China); as well as Europe, the Middle East and Africa. There are a few other excluded countries which Tesla spells out on the official rule page for the competition.

This sort of gamification is actually kind of cool. It’s engaging for owners and helps to really build a grassroots brand identity that legacy automakers don’t particularly have. Heck, even Tesla’s year-end charging recap—kind of like the Tesla owner’s Spotify Wrapped—made spending money to charge actually feel like you won something other than a lighter wallet and more miles on the odometer.

The contest has already started. In fact, Tesla is counting every Supercharging trip since January 1 of this year, so the clock has been running for 174 days already. So if you want to be one of the lucky few, you’d better get a move on and start charging.
