ET reported in November that Tata Power was in talks with the Odisha government to establish the facility.
“Ultimately based on the type of incentives and the type of support that is being provided in terms of lower costs of power and other benefits, it was decided that we will set up the plant in Odisha,” Praveer Sinha, CEO & MD, Tata Power, told ET, after the company reported June quarter earnings.
Sinha said the project also benefited from ready land availability at Gopalpur, where Tata Steel is developing a special economic zone. “The land had already been acquired and was available, allowing us to move ahead with the project quickly,” he said.
The facility will be built in two 5 GW phases, with the first phase expected to start operations in January 2028, followed by the second about six months later.
Tata Power recorded an 11% rise in consolidated net profit in the first quarter of FY27 at ₹1,401 crore compared to ₹1,262 crore a year earlier. Revenue from operations rose 5.6% to ₹19,051.26 crore from ₹18,035.07 crore.
Operating profit, or EBITDA, slipped 3% to ₹4,013 crore.Sinha said the company is also in advanced discussions to finalise land for nuclear projects across the three states of Madhya Pradesh, Odisha and Gujarat, with preliminary site studies, including soil and geotechnical testing, already underway. A final decision is expected in six to eight months.
On reactor sizing, the company is evaluating options with state-run Nuclear Power Corporation of India Ltd (NPCIL), spanning small 220-megawatt units-which typically come in pairs-as well as a standard 700-megawatt design.
