A record-breaking WWE champion’s winning streak has come to an end as he suffered a loss to Cody Rhodes at a recent live event. This was the star’s first loss in nearly 300 days.

Gunther is one of the most dominant in-ring stars in WWE history. He has been a champion for the majority of his main roster run, and even held the Intercontinental Championship for a record 666 days. The Ring General has had a stellar last few months, as he bounced back from a loss to CM Punk at SummerSlam 2025 by retiring two legends in John Cena and AJ Styles.

Gunther was in action at the recently concluded house show in Liverpool, where he faced Cody Rhodes in a Tables match. The Austrian suffered a loss to the American Nightmare, which also ended his 299-day winning streak. The former Imperium leader’s last loss came on August 2, 2025, when he dropped the World Heavyweight Championship to CM Punk. After the loss, the Career Killer went on to win 25 singles matches before his dominant run was stopped by Cody Rhodes in Liverpool last night. This was also the RAW star’s first clean singles loss at a house show.

Gunther believes Cody Rhodes is the golden boy of WWE

Gunther had a few harsh words for Cody Rhodes ahead of their upcoming match at WWE Clash in Castle. The Ring General called the American Nightmare the golden boy of the company, noting that he went after him because he wanted to disrupt the former AEW EVP’s comfort:

“Cody is obviously the golden boy of WWE and he seems very comfortable in that position. I’ve done so much in such a short time since I’ve been in the company and I think it’s time to get even with Cody and I’d like to disrupt his comfort.”

    The Ring General continued:

“That’s exactly what it’s about with Cody. Attention seeker. He really thrives on that. Even in my allocated time as a guest on that show, he finds a way to pass on a message. He can say whatever he wants. I know when that bell rings, I’m a better wrestler than Cody is,” he added.

Both Cody and Gunther are two of the top names in the global juggernaut, and hence, it’s hard to say who will come out on top at Clash in Italy. While the American Nightmare got the better of the Austrian at the Liverpool house show, things will be very different at WWE’s upcoming premium live event.
