    NASA’s moon base is taking shape with 20+ lunar landings planned

    NASA is moving ahead with plans for its Moon Base, a durable outpost near the Moon’s South Pole that is intended to support science, technology development, and eventually human operations. A major part of that effort involves commercial partners Blue Origin, Firefly Aerospace, Intuitive Machines, and Voyager Lunar Systems, which are preparing landers for delivery missions through 2028. These spacecraft are expected to carry key infrastructure and equipment needed to establish a lasting presence on the lunar surface.

    Their work marks an important step in the expansion of commercial lunar transportation. The landers will help establish the systems, logistics, and surface capabilities that future Moon Base operations will depend on.

    More Than 20 Robotic Moon Landings Planned

    Phase I of NASA’s Moon Base architecture plan, which is underway now through 2029, calls for more than twenty robotic landings. Each mission is intended to build on previous flights by improving capabilities and confirming that important systems can operate successfully before later missions arrive.

    Long before astronauts reach the site, robotic spacecraft will deliver scientific instruments to study conditions on and around the Moon. They also will test new technologies and begin putting in place the infrastructure needed to support future human habitation.

    These early missions will give NASA opportunities to learn from real lunar operations and make the overall Moon Base architecture more dependable. Regular cargo deliveries through NASA’s CLPS (Commercial Lunar Payload Services) initiative are expected to help establish a reliable lunar supply chain. That capability will be central to NASA’s goal of maintaining a long-term robotic and human presence on the Moon.

    NASA has also released a Moon Base video update that provides a closer view of the progress being made by the four companies as they prepare spacecraft, hardware, and future flights supporting the agency’s lunar plans.

    Blue Origin

    Blue Origin is moving its Blue Moon MK1 lander through integrated testing ahead of its planned lunar delivery mission. The first flight, called Endurance, will introduce a new class of commercial lander capable of transporting large payloads to the Moon.

    The spacecraft successfully completed a broad series of environmental tests, including a thermal vacuum assessment at NASA’s Johnson Space Center in Houston. The testing confirmed that the lander can function under conditions similar to those it will encounter on the Moon.

    Blue Origin is now working through additional integration milestones ahead of the lander’s next round of testing. Its structure, propulsion components, and avionics are fully assembled. Upcoming evaluations will check the wiring harness connections required to integrate payloads.

    The lander has also completed communications checks with NASA’s Tracking and Data Relay Satellite System and the Deep Space Network. One of the final major tests before launch integration will involve loading cryogenic propellants.

    During its mission, Endurance is expected to demonstrate precision landing, collect information about the lunar environment, and test autonomous systems that could be used on future Moon Base missions.

    Firefly Aerospace

    Firefly Aerospace is preparing Blue Ghost Mission 2, which builds on the company’s first successful Moon landing. The new mission uses a larger configuration designed specifically for operations on the far side of the Moon.

    Blue Ghost will sit on top of Elytra, Firefly’s orbital spacecraft, creating a 22-foot-tall system that is nearly three times the height of the spacecraft used for Blue Ghost Mission 1 in 2025. Because Elytra can deploy payloads both in lunar orbit and on the surface, it gives future Moon Base missions greater flexibility for science and logistics.

    Blue Ghost Mission 2 is planned to become the first American landing on the Moon’s far side. The mission will explore an unusually quiet region that offers scientists an opportunity to investigate both far side geology and the cosmic Dark Ages, a period when newly formed stars were beginning to become visible.

    Three NASA payloads will travel on the mission. Their work is intended to advance scientific research while testing technologies that could contribute to future lunar habitation and infrastructure.

    Firefly also plans to draw on experience from the autonomous landing sequence demonstrated during its first mission. The company is reusing some subsystems from that flight, a strategy intended to speed development and reduce risk while supporting NASA’s goal of creating commercial lunar landers that can operate repeatedly and at larger scales.

    Intuitive Machines

    Intuitive Machines is preparing its IM-3 mission, another example of how commercial spacecraft are becoming part of the infrastructure needed for NASA’s Moon Base. The flight will mark the company’s third Nova-C lunar landing and will also introduce Altus-1, its first lunar data relay satellite, which will travel alongside the lander.

    The Nova-C lander for the mission is named Trinity. Assembly and integration are progressing as Intuitive Machines works toward the broader goal of providing regular cargo and science deliveries to the Moon.

    The spacecraft’s top deck has been aligned, while its internal wiring is undergoing extensive testing before closeout panels are installed. Intuitive Machines recently worked with the X-Ray Cryogenic Facility team at NASA’s Marshall Space Center in Huntsville, Alabama to complete long-range thermal vacuum testing. The tests were designed to verify that the company’s sensors remain accurate across the temperature extremes they could encounter during descent to the lunar surface.

    Next, teams are expected to complete the final stages of development, including engine integration and hot fire testing.

    IM-3 will deploy Altus-1 into lunar orbit along with its three payloads. Trinity will carry five NASA payloads, six commercial payloads, and one civil payload to the surface.

    The mission will support Moon Base science goals by exploring Reiner Gamma’s geomagnetic environment, an unusual magnetic feature on the lunar surface. IM-3 is expected to become the first mission to explore the surface of a lunar swirl, allowing robotic systems and deployed instruments to investigate this still mysterious region in greater detail.

    Voyager Technologies

    Voyager Technologies is testing its Griffin-1 lander inside the Environmental Test Laboratory at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California. The campaign is an important part of preparing the spacecraft for its Moon mission.

    Testing at NASA JPL is intended to confirm that commercial lunar landers have the precision and durability required to support future Moon Base operations.

    Griffin-1 was designed as an infrastructure-class lander and is scheduled to launch in late 2026. It is expected to carry the largest commercial payload ever delivered to the lunar surface.

    Five NASA payloads will be installed on the Astrolab FLIP (FLEX Lunar Innovation Platform) rover. Together, the rover and its instruments will support efforts to improve lunar surface mobility, demonstrate new technologies, and prepare for operations that last for extended periods on the Moon.

    Griffin-1 recently finished mass properties testing, which provided important information for guidance, navigation, control, and flight dynamics. Additional environmental testing is planned over the coming weeks. Those tests will reproduce conditions expected from launch through lunar landing, helping teams reduce risk and improve confidence in the spacecraft’s ability to operate on the Moon.

    After the environmental test campaign is complete, Griffin-1 will return to Voyager’s Lunar System Pittsburgh facility for final assembly. It will then move through its last launch readiness activities before being transported to Cape Canaveral.

    Northrop Grumman Tests Moon Base Technology

    NASA is also working with Northrop Grumman on three technology demonstration payloads that are expected to be delivered to the lunar surface.

    The demonstrations use power and avionics hardware originally developed for the Gateway program’s HALO (Habitation And Logistics Outpost) module. That hardware is now being adapted following NASA’s move away from a lunar strategy centered on orbital operations and toward one focused more heavily on activities on the surface.

    The first demonstrations will evaluate systems designed to survive the lunar night and other harsh conditions, including periods spent in shadow for multiple days. NASA and Northrop Grumman will also test shared surface power infrastructure that could provide electricity to important payloads and other Moon Base assets.

    The demonstrations will additionally evaluate key avionics and power capabilities needed for future operations.

    Building Toward a Lasting Presence on the Moon

    Through commercial lunar deliveries, scientific missions, technology demonstrations, and new surface infrastructure, NASA is steadily developing the systems required for its Moon Base. The broader effort is intended to support long-term exploration and eventually establish a sustained human presence on the lunar surface alongside continuing robotic operations.
