My Favorite Airbnb: A Country Home in the Scottish Highlands

Today, the vibe is a masterful mix of old and new. Restored wooden doors and flooring draped with hand-woven rugs, open fireplaces, standalone baths, and a kitchen that breathes authenticity into the aesthetic and complements charismatic details like a cozy room with a record player and a wall display of records. And the original artwork has meaning: a film poster here, a painting of the original Home Farm owner there.

It’s tempting not to leave this welcoming spot, but another draw of this house is its location. Despite being set on six acres of its own land, it’s surprisingly accessible, and getting to the charming coastal town of Oban takes just 10 minutes by car through beautiful views of the Scottish Highlands. We embrace the beach in April and explore the street on foot before hopping on a boat to neighboring Scottish islands, spotting seals on the way and stopping for fish and chips to warm our bones.

Exploring the grounds at Home Farm

Movie nights in the at-home cinema at Home Farm

Back at the house, we spend our mornings in pajamas and boots, crunching through the leaves to spot red squirrels. In the evenings, we laze by the fire, rolling down the projector screen in the living room for movie night before heading upstairs to bed, where the cloak of natural darkness (no light pollution this far into the Scottish countryside) and deep, deep silence set the tone for the most restorative sleep any of us has had in months.

Home Farm is a place with soul, and one that, once stumbled upon, feels like a treasure find. Just ask its closest neighbors, the nesting barn owls who live in a hut on the roof, and who can be spotted on the property’s integrated “owl-cam.” They look pretty content to me, and if I were them, I’d settle for life here, too.
