Mercedes teases its upcoming 1,000+hp AMG electric SUV

Mercedes teased a new sport SUV on its AMG social media channels over the weekend, expected to be the SUV counterpart to its bonkers 1,153hp AMG GT 4-door revealed in May.

When we attended the reveal of the AMG GT 4-door in May, Mercedes hinted at an upcoming SUV based on similar technology.

As a reminder, the GT 4-door is a fully-electric 1,153hp monster, the most powerful vehicle Mercedes has ever built. It’s the first series production EV to use axial flux motors, which have exceptional power density.

It also has hyper-fast 800V charging that can add 280 miles of range in 11 minutes, which makes it the fastest-charging car coming to the US, by a longshot (though not as fast as they’re doing over in China). It accomplishes this through a silicon-anode battery, a relatively new battery technology.

It also comes with silly fake engine noises and gear shifts.

Now, Mercedes AMG seems to be inching closer to a reveal of the SUV version, with a series of posts on its social media channels over the weekend showing photos of a sporty-looking SUV under cover, along with the caption “Born in Affalterbach. Built to challenge all you know. #MercedesAMG.”

Affalterbach is the city in Germany where Mercedes high-performance AMG division is headquartered. While there have been other Mercedes AMG SUVs before, this would be the first AMG “completely developed in Affalterbach.”

The photos don’t show a whole lot – general shape and light design, really. But the car is clearly taller than the AMG GT 4-door, denoting an SUV, and has similar headlights and taillight design, suggesting that there will be some similarities there. The taillights are the same design, but unlike the GT, there’s only one taillight on each side of the vehicle, rather than three (I kinda like the 3 taillight design, it’s different).

Mercedes also posted a short video, though not much more can be gleaned from it than from the photos.

One notable design question is the front grille. Photos of the AMG GT show a somewhat pronounced grille which got a lot of reaction online. I will say that, in person, it was not as apparent – it’s really just photos from the front 3/4 angle that make it stand out.

On the AMG SUV, we can’t tell if the grille will look the same. There is certainly some trace of it under the cover, but the different proportions of the car may make it seem less apparent, as the low hood of the AMG GT probably makes it seem more pronounced.

We did hear inklings of the SUV at the AMG GT event, though obviously Mercedes was not ready to reveal it then. We heard that there may be multiple models on the same platform, with the same drivetrain tech, so we might even see multiple sizes of SUVs with the 1,000+hp underpinnings.

In the meantime, here’s the video from the short test ride we got to take at the end of the AMG GT event:

We’ll keep you updated with all the news whenever Mercedes decides the full unveil is ready.

In the meantime, what do you think about a potential 1,000+hp Mercedes AMG SUV? Do you think it will be enough to pick up your poodle from the groomers, or will you need more seats or more power for that? Do you think the higher center of gravity than the sport sedan will somehow make it more capable on the tracks you will never take it on? Will your comfortable family hauler be improved by having fake engine rumbles and make it less comfortable? Let us know in the comments.
