Kerala to set up an independent AYUSH University

The Kerala government has initiated steps to establish an independent AYUSH University to coordinate education, research, clinical services and drug development across the State’s AYUSH systems of medicine.

Health Minister K. Muraleedharan said in an official release on Tuesday (August 4, 2026) that a four-member committee has been constituted to prepare the draft legislation for the proposed university.

The committee will have the Principal Secretary, AYUSH department as the chairperson and the State mission director of the National AYUSH Mission as convener. The other members of the committee are the director of Ayurveda medical education and the principal and controlling officer of the Government Homoeopathic Medical College.

    ‘A historic step’

Mr. Muraleedharan said the State was taking a historic step by moving to create a new academic framework for the AYUSH sector.

The proposed AYUSH University will bring all AYUSH educational institutions, currently under the Kerala University of Health Sciences, under a single umbrella and strengthen education, research and comprehensive academic collaboration in the field.

The proposed university will be based at the School of Fundamental Research in Ayurveda at Tripunithura.

The committee will prepare the draft legislation for a separate AYUSH University after examining the existing functioning of AYUSH educational institutions, the proposed university’s organisational structure, academic infrastructure, research projects and administrative framework. The draft Bill for the university is expected to be submitted within two months.

    To raise standards

The government is seeking to establish the university to raise the academic standards of Ayurveda, Homoeopathy, Siddha, Unani and other AYUSH systems, expand research opportunities and to develop academic programmes that meet international standards.

Mr. Muraleedharan said that once an independent AYUSH University is established, AYUSH education, research, clinical studies and drug development will improve and that this will help Kerala’s traditional systems of medicine gain wider national and international acceptance.
