Islam Makhachev identifies glaring weakness in Ian Garry’s game that could decide their UFC 330 fight

Islam Makhachev has identified a specific weakness in Ian Garry’s game that he believes can be exploited when the two meet at UFC 330.

In a recent interview with Daniel Cormier, Makhachev spoke about Garry’s technical ability. While doing that, he also shared his observation on Garry’s response to sustained pressure as an area he can potentially exploit:

“He’s good. Good skills, you know. But, bro, he’s not undefeated. Nobody beat him. We see, bro. Shavkat [Rakhmonov] beat him four rounds, bro. When somebody give him pressure, take him down, he have problem.”

That assessment seemingly fits the broader stylistic challenge facing Garry in the matchup. The welterweight contender has built much of his success around controlling distance with his long frame, movement, kicks and straight punches. Keeping the fight in open space allows him to dictate the pace and use his reach advantage effectively.

Makhachev’s approach is likely to challenge that comfort. His grappling system is built around advancing behind pressure, cutting off the cage and forcing opponents into clinch exchanges before chaining together takedown attempts. Once he closes distance, his combination of body locks, trips, single legs and mat returns can make prolonged separation difficult.

The physical dimensions also make Garry’s ability to maintain range particularly important. Garry stands five inches taller and owns a four-inch reach advantage. However, those advantages become less valuable if Makhachev can consistently force him toward the fence and turn the fight into a grappling contest.

Islam Makhachev believes Ian Machado Garry’s reception in Philadelphia shows that some fans don’t like the Irishman. Garry was repeatedly booed at Thursday’s press conference while Makhachev received loud cheers whenever he addressed the crowd.

Garry remained composed throughout the reception and insisted the hostility would not affect his focus as he prepares for his first UFC title opportunity. He also predicted the crowd would change its attitude if he leaves the arena with the championship.

Makhachev offered a blunt explanation for Garry’s reception, stating:

“No, I’m not surprised [they are booing him]… I know. Nobody likes Ian Garry, myself also. Because people are confused which country you represent. Brazil or Ireland? People don’t know. People know who they have to support.”

During one moment at the press conference while fielding a question from a reporter about Abulmanap Nurmagomedov, Garry tried to interject and offer his perspective. Makhachev asked the challenger to “shut up” and stop losing out on fans for his behavior.
