X-Men ’97 season 2 episode 8, titled “The Dead Man’s Hand,” brings Gambit back into the X-Men’s story after his transformation into Apocalypse’s Horseman of Death. X-Men ’97 season 2 episode 8 recap: Did Rogue save Gambit?
Rogue plays a central role in helping Gambit break free from Apocalypse’s control in X-Men ’97 season 2 episode 8. The episode begins with Rogue dreaming about the night of the Genosha massacre. In the dream, she dances with Gambit instead of Magneto, giving her a different version of the moment before the tragedy. Gambit repeats his earlier words, “Remember, chere, some things be deeper than skin,” before his appearance changes and the dream turns threatening.
The connection between Rogue and Gambit becomes more important after X-Force returns with Apocalypse’s body. The X-Men initially believe Gambit, now Apocalypse’s Horseman of Death, has defeated the ancient mutant. However, Professor X later discovers that Apocalypse’s consciousness remains connected to Remy.
Rogue wants to save Gambit, while Cable considers him a threat that must be contained. Xavier searches for Remy through Cerebro and locates him in New Orleans, where Gambit has taken control of both the Thieves Guild and the Assassins Guild. Bella Donna Boudreaux, his former fiancée and the leader of the Assassins Guild, is among those under his control.
Rogue confronts Gambit when the X-Men arrive in New Orleans. She places her hand on him to reach Remy through her powers, but Gambit overpowers her and takes her away.
At the LeBeau mansion, Gambit explains that he wants to make Rogue immortal so they can remain together. He needs the Heart of Candra, a powerful gem connected to Candra, also known as the X-Ternal.
When Candra refuses to cooperate, Gambit kills her and takes the gem. He then places it on Rogue, causing her to lose consciousness. The X-Men arrive during the ritual, setting up the confrontation that allows Professor X and Rogue to reach the real Remy and challenge Apocalypse’s control.
Is Apocalypse still controlling Gambit?
When Professor X enters Gambit’s head in X-Men ’97 season 2 episode 8, a huge revelation occurs. The X-Men find Apocalypse’s remains beneath the Parthenon, leading them to believe he has died. But Xavier finds out that Apocalypse has implanted his mind inside Remy.
While within Gambit’s head, Xavier confronts Apocalypse and attempts to break him away from Remy. With Rogue’s assistance, Xavier is able to track down the actual Gambit. They work in tandem to make Apocalypse’s grip over Remy less strong, which in turn gives him back control of his life.
Having said that, the danger is still there. Beast adds that Gambit’s mental activity is abnormally high, and his physical health is serious. Xavier verifies that Remy still possesses Apocalypse’s consciousness.
So, Cable kills Gambit because he sees him as a persistent threat. He is stopped by the X-Men, and Remy is protected by Jean Gray, who steps in.
While the conclusion establishes that Apocalypse no longer has complete control over Gambit, it also shows that he is not entirely immune to the Horseman’s power. X-Men ’97 season 2 continues to tie Apocalypse to Gambit as the show nears its conclusion.
What does Val Cooper’s Tower card mean for Gambit?
Episode 8 of X-Men ’97 season 2 concludes with Val Cooper approaching Cable and the rest of X-Force, introducing yet another unresolved threat. Now that Sunspot and Jubilee are X-Men, Cable has fewer friends to rely on. Although Cooper does not reveal her intended victim right away, she does offer him a new assignment. She has a tarot card called The Tower instead.
The Tower has long been a symbol of rapid devastation, chaos, and profound transformation. The tarot images that Gambit used to become the Horseman of Death earlier in X-Men ’97 season 2 is likewise related to this card. After Gambit saves the day, it shows up, connecting the scenario to the unsolved threat that Remy and Apocalypse face.
Cooper has not specified who she wants Cable to arrest in this episode. Nonetheless, Apocalypse’s awareness is still lodged in Gambit’s head, thus the two are inseparable. Remy remains a danger to Cable as well. As the X-Men gear up for the season finale, the Tower card serves as a warning of yet another disturbance.
“The Dead Man’s Hand” is the title of an episode that has some relevance to the plot as well. Nightcrawler gets the Dead Man’s Hand—aces and eights—in the earlier X-Men poker game. This alludes to Gambit’s resurrection and his metamorphosis as the Horseman of Death from Apocalypse.
