Insurance costs likely aren’t the first thing that comes to mind when shopping for a new electric or hybrid vehicle, but it is something you should consider. Here are the top 10 most affordable EVs and hybrids to insure for 2026.

With drivers increasingly seeking more efficient options, Mercury Insurance is making it easier to compare and view the ongoing costs of owning an electric or hybrid vehicle.

“Electric vehicles have become increasingly mainstream,” Chong Gao, Director of R&D for Mercury Insurance, said.

Gao added that “Understanding insurance costs before making a purchase can help drivers choose the vehicle that best fits both their transportation needs and their budget.”

To make it a bit easier for drivers to view the added costs, the California-based insurance company compiled a list of the “10 most affordable new 2026 model year electric and hybrid vehicles to insure.”

Hybrids accounted for eight of the top 10, while two Chevrolet electric vehicles made the list. The Chevy Blazer EV ranked second, and the Chevy Equinox EV placed ninth.

The rankings are based on Mercury’s internal insurance analysis. Mercury Insurance’s research team analyzed insurance costs for new hybrid and electric vehicles for model years 2025 to 2027.

“Insurance should be considered alongside charging capability, driving range and fuel savings when evaluating an electrified vehicle,” according to Gao.

The cost to insure EVs and hybrids is influenced by many of the same factors as traditional gas-powered cars, including repair costs, replacement parts, safety technology, and historical claims.

According to the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC), electric cars cost $49 more per month to insure than SUVs.

At the same time, the Highway Loss Data Institute (HLDI) has found that EVs have had lower claim frequencies than comparable gas-powered vehicles. The difference in average total-loss payments between EVs and gas-powered vehicles continues to narrow over time, the HLDI found.
