Spain’s Dani Olmo has hit back at Argentina’s assistant coach Roberto Ayala following their altercation during the 2026 FIFA World Cup final. Ayala had earlier claimed that he had only shoved Olmo, not punched him.

However, in an interview with Diari de Terrassa, the midfielder insisted that the Argentine is not telling the truth. Olmo went on to reveal that an apology is of no value when individuals refuse to acknowledge their errors, saying (via SPORTbible):

“Someone who says they’re sorry but justifies a punch by saying it was a response to a comment is surely not sorry because he is lying. I didn’t say anything to him, so he doesn’t need to apologise. What truly defines us is not the mistake, but the courage to acknowledge it with humility, honesty and dignity. When my children, my family and all those fans watch the game.”

There were numerous alterations in the aftermath of the 2026 FIFA World Cup final between Argentina and Spain, one of which involved Dani Olmo and Ayala. The Argentine assistant coach appeared to have made contact with Olmo’s neck during the altercation.

Ayala claimed it was a shove, but Olmo insisted the coach punched him on his neck. However, FIFA has revealed that they are reviewing several post-match incidents of the recently concluded FIFA World Cup final, and those guilty of misconduct are expected to be penalized and fined.

During the encounter, Ferran Torres scored the goal that guaranteed the trophy for the Spaniards in the 106th minute. The goal was likewise the only goal of the final, dominated by Lamine Yamal and his teammates.

Dani Olmo was a key player in Luis de la Fuente’s squad during the recently concluded FIFA World Cup. The attacking midfielder also registered an appearance in all of Spain’s encounters from the group stage to the final of the tournament.

Olmo failed to find the back of the net throughout the tournament but registered two assists in eight games. His attacking presence also helped improve the Spaniard’s creativity, and he played an important role in distributing the ball from the midfield to the final third.

The attacking midfielder is expected to replicate his heroics at the World Cup for Barcelona in the forthcoming season, and he remains a crucial player for the Spaniards.
