The Greater Chennai Corporation has launched an extensive anti-rabies and parasite-control campaign targeting around two lakh dogs. Beginning in three northern zones, veterinary teams aim to reach approximately 3,000 animals daily.
The Greater Chennai Corporation is targeting approximately two lakh dogs through an extensive anti-rabies vaccination campaign covering street dogs and household pets.
The program is expected to continue for 75 working days, with veterinary teams aiming to vaccinate around 3,000 animals each day. The target is higher than the approximately 1.47 lakh dogs reportedly covered during the previous year’s drive.
Along with vaccination, animals will receive deworming and treatment for internal and external parasites. The combination is intended to reduce rabies transmission while improving the general health of Chennai’s dog population.

Three Northern Zones Lead the First Phase
The campaign begins in Tiruvottiyur, Manali and Tondiarpet before expanding to other parts of Chennai. Veterinary teams will visit neighborhoods to identify and vaccinate street dogs.
Pet dogs and cats can also receive free anti-rabies vaccination through the campaign. Residents should follow GCC announcements for camp locations, dates and timings in their respective zones.
The Corporation already operates Animal Birth Control centers and veterinary clinics that provide sterilization, anti-rabies vaccination and other veterinary services. Dogs captured through its ABC program are vaccinated and returned to the areas where they were found, in accordance with national rules.

Vaccination and Parasite Control Work Together
Anti-rabies vaccination reduces the likelihood of infected dogs transmitting the virus to people or other animals. Sustained vaccination coverage must be combined with sterilization, surveillance and prompt investigation of suspected rabies cases.
Deworming and parasite-control treatment do not prevent rabies directly. However, they can improve animal health and support a more comprehensive approach to managing street and pet dog populations.

Chennai Moves to Impose ₹25,000 Fine for Pet Abandonment
The GCC has proposed a ₹25,000 fine for residents who abandon pet dogs. The penalty is intended to discourage abandonment, which civic officials believe has contributed to an increase in the street dog population in several zones.
The fine is still a proposal and cannot be collected until the Corporation Council approves the resolution. Pet owners are therefore not currently liable for this new ₹25,000 penalty.
Abandoning a pet can create animal-welfare, disease-control and public-safety problems. Previously owned dogs may also be difficult to distinguish from community dogs unless they have been licensed and microchipped.
Pet Registration and Microchips Strengthen Accountability
GCC data indicate that 1,15,548 pets have been registered across Chennai’s 15 zones, while licenses with microchips have been issued to 78,328 animals.
Microchips provide permanent identification that can connect a lost, abandoned or injured animal with its registered owner. Licensing records can also contain vaccination details, helping authorities monitor compliance with rabies-prevention requirements.
The proposed abandonment penalty would be more enforceable when supported by comprehensive licensing, updated ownership records and citywide microchipping.
Over 15,000 Dog Complaints Put Chennai’s Hotspots in Focus
The GCC reportedly received 15,477 complaints involving street dogs during the first six months of 2026. Tondiarpet recorded the highest number, with 1,869 complaints, while Manali reported 280.
Madhavaram, Royapuram, Thiru. Vi. Ka. Nagar, Anna Nagar, Teynampet, Kodambakkam and Adyar each received more than 1,000 complaints during the same period.
The Corporation also caught 26,498 dogs for Animal Birth Control procedures in residential areas during those six months. Complaints and hotspot information are used to guide capture, sterilization, vaccination and release operations.
Rabies Is Preventable, but Every Bite Needs Urgent Care
Rabies spreads mainly through the saliva of an infected animal following a bite or scratch. Although preventable through dog vaccination and timely post-exposure treatment, it is almost always fatal once symptoms begin.
Anyone exposed should wash the wound with soap under running water for about 15 minutes and seek immediate medical care for assessment, anti-rabies vaccination and, when required, rabies immunoglobulin.(1✔ ✔Trusted Source
