The European Union has imposed sanctions on five individuals involved in Russia’s military-industrial complex following recent Russian air strikes on Ukraine, the bloc’s foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas said on Friday.

“Each new attack on Ukraine is another reason for Europe to tighten the screws on Russia,” Kallas wrote on X.

The new sanctions were adopted on 7 August in response to the strikes, Kallas said, but she did not identify the individuals targeted or provide further details about the measures.

Kallas said Moscow was escalating its attacks on civilians as Russian forces remained stalled on the battlefield.

“With its army stalled on the battlefield, Moscow is further escalating its campaign of terror against civilians,” she said. “The EU must continue to intensify pressure on Russia until Moscow ends its war.”

The five listings come just over two weeks after EU governments adopted the bloc’s 21st sanctions package against Russia.

Approved on 23 July, the package added 48 individuals and 170 entities to the EU sanctions list, the largest round of listings since Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine.

The measures target Russia’s financial, energy and military-industrial sectors, as well as cryptocurrency networks, the shadow fleet used to circumvent oil restrictions and companies involved in supplying Moscow’s war economy.

The package includes 56 listings targeting Russia’s military-industrial complex, including 37 individuals and entities directly linked to the production and supply chain of long-range drones.

The agreement was reached after Greece secured an annually renewable exemption allowing companies to continue shipping Russian liquefied natural gas to non-EU customers.
