The Bundibugyo Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of the Congo has spread across five eastern provinces, while attacks on health teams and unidentified transmission chains threaten containment efforts.
Can Congo’s rapidly expanding Ebola outbreak be contained before transmission spreads further?
The Democratic Republic of the Congo has reported 2,344 confirmed cases and 930 deaths as of July 18, 2026. Another 724 patients were in isolation or hospital care, while 466 people had recovered. The outbreak, declared in eastern Congo on May 15, has been described as the fastest-growing Ebola outbreak on record.
The disease is caused by the less common Bundibugyo virus, one of the viruses capable of causing Ebola disease. Unlike Ebola disease caused by the Zaire virus, Bundibugyo virus disease currently has no approved vaccine or specific treatment, although candidate products are being studied. Early supportive care, including rehydration and treatment of symptoms, can improve survival.

Ituri Remains the Centre of the Ebola Outbreak
The outbreak has affected five eastern provinces: Ituri, North Kivu, South Kivu, Haut-Uélé and Tshopo. WHO data from July 15 showed that Ituri accounted for nearly 90% of confirmed cases and more than 83% of reported deaths at that stage of the outbreak.
Health authorities have continued surveillance, testing, case management and contact tracing across affected areas. The rapid rise in reported infections partly reflects expanded testing and diagnostic capacity, but sustained transmission remains a major concern.

Unknown Transmission Chains Threaten Containment
WHO expressed concern that about 80% of new infections were emerging from unidentified transmission chains, suggesting that the disease was spreading faster than response teams could trace it.

Overcrowding, population displacement, insecurity and limited access to healthcare, clean water and other basic services are also increasing transmission risks in affected regions.
Violence and Unpaid Wages Undermine Ebola Control Efforts
At least 12 attacks on health facilities and response teams have been recorded since the outbreak began, with misinformation, rumours and public distrust contributing to violence. Some healthcare workers have also stopped working while protesting unpaid wages.
At least 36 healthcare workers have died after becoming infected. WHO had documented 119 confirmed infections among health workers by July 15, highlighting persistent occupational risks and weaknesses in infection prevention and control.
Violence and disrupted healthcare operations can delay surveillance, reduce treatment capacity and prevent response teams from reaching affected communities.
How Does Bundibugyo Ebola Spread?
Ebola spreads through direct contact with the blood or other bodily fluids of a person who is ill with or has died from the disease. Transmission can also occur through objects and surfaces contaminated with infected bodily fluids, including bedding, clothing, medical equipment and needles. The virus can initially enter human populations through contact with infected animals. Fruit bats are considered likely natural hosts, while infected primates and other wild animals may also transmit the virus to people.
Symptoms of Ebola to Watch For
Symptoms may begin with:
- Fever
- Severe headache
- Muscle pain
- Weakness and fatigue
- Vomiting
- Diarrhoea
- Abdominal pain
Some patients later develop unexplained bleeding or bruising. Anyone with possible exposure and compatible symptoms requires urgent medical evaluation and isolation.
Early symptoms can resemble other infectious diseases, making laboratory testing essential for diagnosis.
Canada and the US Tighten Border Measures
Canada announced temporary restrictions preventing foreign nationals who had been in the Democratic Republic of the Congo during the previous 21 days from entering the country. The measures took effect on July 20, 2026.
The United States also introduced measures affecting travellers who had recently been in Congo, while seven American aid workers were placed in quarantine in Kenya.
WHO has advised against broad travel and trade restrictions, arguing that they can increase stigma, disrupt humanitarian assistance and make outbreak control more difficult. WHO continued to assess the risk of wider international spread as low at the time of the report.
Stronger Community Trust Is Critical to Containment
Controlling Ebola requires more than hospital treatment. WHO recommends rapid identification and isolation of cases, contact tracing, laboratory testing, infection prevention, safe and dignified burials and strong community engagement.
Community trust is especially important when misinformation leads families to hide illness, resist contact tracing or avoid treatment centres.
The rising number of unlinked infections, attacks on response teams and deaths among health workers show that the outbreak is both a medical and humanitarian emergency. Containing it will require reliable funding, protection for health workers, stronger local engagement and rapid access to supportive care for infected patients.
