Why are Ebola cases rising in DR Congo? Health officials have confirmed nearly 3,000 infections after a data review, prompting the prime minister to call for a faster outbreak response.

DR Congo Nears 3,000 Ebola Cases as PM Urges Faster Action

The Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) has taken another alarming turn. Health officials have confirmed nearly 3,000 Ebola infections after updating the country’s surveillance records, prompting the government to step up its response. ()

The revised figures have prompted Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka to call for a faster and more coordinated response as the country struggles to contain what has become one of its most severe Ebola outbreaks in recent years.

Why Did the Case Count Jump?

The sharp increase doesn’t necessarily mean thousands of new infections happened overnight.

Instead, health authorities said a comprehensive review of patient records and surveillance data in the eastern provinces of Ituri and North Kivu identified more than 300 previously unconfirmed cases.

After verification, those infections were added to the national total, pushing confirmed cases to nearly 3,000. Officials say the review provides a clearer picture of how widespread the outbreak has become and will help improve future response efforts.

    More Than 1,000 Lives Lost

The outbreak has already claimed more than 1,000 lives, with the death toll continuing to climb as new cases emerge. Hundreds of patients remain hospitalized, while many others are receiving treatment in Ebola care centers across eastern Congo.

Experts also believe the actual number of infections may be higher, as limited healthcare access and underreporting continue to make surveillance difficult in some communities.

    PM Urges Faster Action

Speaking after the revised figures were released, Prime Minister Judith Suminwa Tuluka outlined the government’s next steps, calling for stronger coordination between national and provincial authorities, quicker diagnosis, improved surveillance, and greater support for frontline health workers.

Why Containing the Outbreak Has Been So Difficult

Unlike previous Ebola outbreaks, this one is unfolding in parts of eastern Congo affected by armed conflict, population displacement, and limited healthcare access. These challenges have made it harder for health teams to identify cases, trace contacts, and isolate infected patients before the virus spreads further.

Community mistrust has also complicated response efforts. In some areas, families have been reluctant to report illnesses or follow safe burial practices, making it easier for Ebola to spread.

Health Workers Face Their Own Crisis

As the outbreak grows, healthcare workers are facing mounting pressure.

In Ituri province, staff at one Ebola treatment center recently went on strike over unpaid performance bonuses, temporarily disrupting patient care. Officials said they are working to resolve the payment issues, but the incident highlights the strain on the country’s healthcare system as it responds to one of its largest Ebola emergencies.

A Rare Ebola Strain Adds Another Challenge

The current outbreak is being driven by the Bundibugyo strain of the Ebola virus, which is far less common than the Zaire strain responsible for several previous outbreaks.

Unlike the Zaire strain, there is currently no approved vaccine or treatment specifically for Bundibugyo Ebola, although experimental therapies are now being tested in Congo. That has made controlling the outbreak significantly more challenging.

    What Happens Next?

Health officials say expanding testing, improving contact tracing, and strengthening community engagement remain their top priorities. International organizations, including the World Health Organization and Africa CDC, continue to support Congo’s response, but experts warn that without faster containment efforts, the outbreak could continue to spread in the coming weeks.
