New Delhi: India will save foreign exchange worth about ₹40,000 crore annually by slashing dependence on imported printed circuit boards (PCBs), which are now planned to be manufactured domestically, electronics and information technology minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said on Saturday.

The Centre expects Jewar in Uttar Pradesh to become a major manufacturing hub for electronics, he added. Vaishnaw and Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Saturday jointly laid the foundation stone of two projects in the upcoming electronics manufacturing cluster (EMC) located in the Yamuna Expressway Industrial Development Authority (YEIDA) industrial region near Noida.

Speaking at the occasion, Vaishnaw said India is already the 6th largest electronics exporter, and the government has set the target to become the 2nd largest globally. “We are moving from assembly to deep manufacturing. The advanced multi-layer PCBs being built here, some with 20 to 22 layers, are the backbone of modern technology. What we once imported, we will now ‘Make in India‘ for the world’, Vaishnaw said.

Considered as the essential backbone of electronics, PCBs provide the physical foundation and electrical pathways that allow delicate components to communicate. The projects include a Rs. 3,250 crore joint venture by contract manufacturer Amber Enterprises with Korea Circuit Co. Ltd. (KCC) to produce high-density interconnect (HDI) PCBs, flexible PCBs and semiconductor substrates.

A separate ₹3,500 crore, 100-acre facility by Amber will focus on room air conditioners, copper clad laminates and other critical components. Together, both plants are expected to generate employment for around 3,000 people. Designed as Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) facilities, both manufacturing units will integrate advanced water recycling systems, resource-efficient operations and sustainable manufacturing practices, Amber said.
