Nara Smith says couples therapy helped her and Lucky Blue communicate during their daughter Whimsy’s cancer treatment. The toddler is now in remission.

Celebrity Nara Smith Credits Therapy Amid Her Child`s Cancer

Influencer and model Nara Smith has described how couples therapy helped her and husband Lucky Blue Smith communicate and support one another while their two-year-old daughter, Whimsy Lou, underwent cancer treatment.
Speaking on the July 29 episode of Call Her Daddy, Smith discussed the months her family spent managing hospital visits, chemotherapy, parenting responsibilities and uncertainty surrounding Whimsy’s condition.

Smith said therapy had helped the couple establish a stronger foundation before the diagnosis. Those communication skills became particularly valuable when both parents were struggling but still needed to care for Whimsy and their other children.

“Couples therapy gets a bad rep,” Smith said, challenging the belief that counselling is only necessary when a marriage is approaching separation.

She explained that before therapy, she and her husband sometimes “talked at each other but never with each other.” Counselling reportedly helped them recognise each other’s emotions, create space for difficult conversations and work through stress as a team.

Whimsy Entered Remission After Completing Treatment

Smith said Whimsy completed her final cancer treatment and entered remission shortly after her second birthday. The toddler marked the end of treatment by ringing a hospital bell, a tradition used in many cancer centres to recognise the completion of a treatment programme.

Smith described the moment as highly emotional for the family after months of hospital stays and uncertainty. Whimsy reportedly underwent chemotherapy and experienced side effects including nausea and hair loss.(1✔ ✔Trusted Source

The family has not publicly disclosed the specific type or stage of Whimsy’s cancer. Smith previously said the condition required immediate treatment after tests and a biopsy confirmed the diagnosis.

Smith and her husband waited until Whimsy had completed treatment before discussing the experience publicly. In July, Smith announced that her daughter was in remission after approximately eight months of treatment.

Parents Shared Hospital and Home Responsibilities

Whimsy’s treatment reportedly involved repeated hospital admissions, sometimes lasting several days. Lucky Blue handled many overnight hospital stays while Nara cared for their other young children and continued managing responsibilities at home.

Smith said the couple alternated between providing emotional and practical support. When one parent felt overwhelmed, the other stepped in to keep the family functioning.

She compared the experience to a three-legged race in which both parents had to remain connected and adjust to each other’s pace. The crisis required cooperation, but Smith believes it ultimately brought the couple closer.(1✔ ✔Trusted Source

She also acknowledged that their relationship is not perfect. Their children have witnessed disagreements, but Smith said they have also seen their parents resolve conflicts and return to common ground.

Counselling Can Support Families Facing Childhood Cancer

A childhood cancer diagnosis can affect the emotional health and daily routine of the entire family. Parents may experience fear, uncertainty, exhaustion, financial pressure and difficulty communicating while simultaneously making medical decisions and caring for other children.

Couples or family counselling cannot change the medical course of cancer. However, it may help parents communicate more clearly, acknowledge different coping styles, distribute responsibilities and discuss emotions that may otherwise remain unspoken.

The National Cancer Institute advises families to speak with their child’s medical team when they need emotional or practical support. Doctors and hospital social workers may provide referrals to counsellors, psychologists, family therapists or support groups.

Counselling may be useful even when a relationship is not in crisis. It can give couples practical tools for listening, resolving disagreements and supporting each other before stress becomes unmanageable.

    Privacy Remained a Major Concern

Smith said the family initially kept Whimsy’s diagnosis private to protect their daughter during treatment.

She reportedly worried that someone might recognise or record the family during hospital visits and share the information before they were ready to speak publicly. This concern added another layer of anxiety while the family was already managing a medical crisis.(1✔ ✔Trusted Source

Smith later found comfort in speaking with other parents at the hospital and hearing from families who had experienced childhood cancer. Those interactions helped her feel less isolated and contributed to her decision to share Whimsy’s story.

She said she hoped using her platform could help at least one family feel less alone. The couple has nevertheless continued to withhold details such as the cancer type, respecting Whimsy’s medical privacy.

Remission Does Not Eliminate the Need for Follow-Up

Remission means that the signs and symptoms of cancer have decreased. It may be partial or complete, and it is not automatically the same as a cure.

Because Whimsy’s specific diagnosis has not been disclosed, no conclusions can be drawn about her prognosis, recurrence risk or future treatment needs. Children who complete cancer treatment typically continue receiving follow-up care. The schedule depends on the cancer type, treatment received and possible short- or long-term effects.

Follow-up may include medical examinations, laboratory tests, imaging and monitoring for developmental, physical or emotional effects associated with cancer treatment.

The end of treatment can bring relief, but families may also experience anxiety about recurrence and uncertainty about returning to everyday life. Psychosocial support can remain valuable during remission and survivorship—not only while active treatment is underway.
