The full-size luxury SUV can drive nearly 600 miles (950 km) without stopping and can recharge in as little as five minutes. BYD launched the flagship Great Tang SUV on Tuesday after preorders exceeded 150,000, its highest so far for a single vehicle.
BYD Great Tang secures a record 150,000 preorders
BYD is known for its ultra-low-cost vehicles, such as the Seagull EV, sold overseas as the Dolphin Surf and Dolphin Mini, which sell for under $10,000 in China.
That’s about to change very soon. After introducing its new Blade Battery 2.0 and Flash Charging system in March, BYD has gone on a full-scale offensive, launching new models ranging from electric supercars to flagship SUVs, equipped with the new technology.
At the Beijing Auto Show in April, BYD showcased a wide range of vehicles, including the 1,000+ hp Denza Z, the Yangwang U9 Xtreme, the third-gen Yuan Plus, and several others under its Fang Cheng Bao sub-brand.
Despite a massive lineup, it was the Great Tang (also known as Datang in China) that stole the show. Shortly after opening preorders at the event on April 24, BYD said the flagship electric SUV received over 30,000 orders in its first 24 hours.
In less than two weeks, preorders reached over 100,000. During its official launch event on Tuesday, BYD revealed that the full-size SUV has now secured over 150,000 preorders, marking a new record for one of its models.
The flagship SUV is impressive, boasting “29 world firsts,” according to BYD, including a pure electric driving range of 590 miles (950 km) and China’s first 2+2+3 seven-seat configuration.
It’s available with single- and dual-motor powertrains. The former delivers up to 496 hp (370 kW), while the latter provides a combined 784 hp (585 kW).
The interior is packed with premium extras, BYD’s latest tech, and plenty of digital screens. The cockpit features three large screens, one for the driver, one for the infotainment, and another for the passenger, that span the entire dashboard.
For the rear passengers, there’s a massive entertainment screen that drops from the ceiling. And that’s just the start.
The Great Tang offers zero-gravity, captain-style seats in the front and second rows, with heating, ventilation, and massage capabilities. To top it off, BYD even added a built-in cooler and folding tray tables.
For a smooth, premium driving experience, the luxury SUV is equipped with BYD’s Disus-A intelligent control system and a dual-chamber air suspension.
Regarding safety and convenience features, the Great Tang uses BYD’s God’s eye B ADAS system. The setup includes a roof-mounted Lidar that provides features such as high-speed NOA (Navigation on Autopilot) and smart remote parking.
BYD officially launched the Great Tang on Tuesday. It’s available in purely electric (EV) and plug-in hybrid versions. The base Premium EV model, starting at 239,900 yuan ($35,500), is powered by a 105.79 kWh battery, providing a CLTC driving range of 497 miles (800 km).
Starting at just 269,900 yuan ($40,000), the Flagship EV trim uses a larger 130.15 kWh battery that delivers a CLTC range of up to 590 miles (950 km).
Thanks to its 1,000V architecture and Flash Charging tech, the electric SUV can recharge from 10% to 70% in five minutes. For a full recharge (10% to 97%), it takes just nine minutes.
Measuring 5,263 mm in length, 1,999 mm in width, and 1,800 mm in height, with a wheelbase of 3,130 mm, the Great Tang is about the size of the Li Auto L9, or even bigger than the Hyundai IONIQ 9 and Kia EV9.
