The luxury three-row electric SUV has a driving range of up to 590 miles (950 km) and can recharge in as little as 5 minutes with BYD’s new Blade Battery and Flash Charging system. In China, it starts at under $37,000, but there’s one problem — BYD can’t keep up with demand.

BYD delays flagship Datang electric SUV launch date

BYD is on the offensive. After revealing its new Blade Battery 2.0 and Flash Charging system in March, the company has launched several new vehicles equipped with the new tech, ranging from electric supercars to high-end SUVs and sedans.

At the Beijing Auto Show last month, it was BYD’s three-row electric SUV, the Datang (Great Tang), that stole the spotlight.

After opening preorders at the event, BYD announced the flagship electric SUV received over 30,000 orders in its first 24 hours.

Last week, Lu Tian, general manager of BYD’s Dynasty series, said that Datang has now secured over 100,000 preorders as anticipation for the three-row EV continues building. BYD was expected to launch the Datang (Great Tang) officially at the end of May, but that reportedly won’t happen.

According to local dealers (viaCarNewsChina), BYD is delaying the launch to June 8 to meet higher-than-expected demand.

The report comes after CEO Wang Chuanfu said demand for vehicles equipped with its new Blade Battery 2.0 had exceeded its production capacity.

With presale prices starting at just 250,000 yuan ($36,500), it’s no wonder buyers are lining up for the full-size electric SUV. The Great Tang is 5,263 mm long, 1,999 mm wide, and 1,790 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 3,130 mm, or a bit bigger than the Hyundai IONIQ 9 and Kia EV9.

BYD boasted that the flagship SUV has “29 world firsts,” including a pure-electric range of up to 590 miles (950 km) and China’s first 2+2+3 seven-seat configuration.

The Datang is available with single and dual-motor powertrains, delivering 370 kW (496 hp) and 585 kW (784 hp), respectively.

Inside, the flagship electric SUV is loaded with digital screens, advanced tech, and premium features. The setup includes three screens spanning the entire width of the dash, plus a massive entertainment screen for rear passengers that drops down from the roof.

Equipped with BYD’s new Blade Battery 2.0 and Flash Charging, the Datang (Great Tang) can recharge from 10% to 70% in just five minutes. For a full recharge (10% to 97%), it takes nine minutes.

The vehicle also features BYD’s God’s eye B ADAS system, which uses a roof-mounted Lidar to provide safety and convenience features like high-speed NOA (Navigation on Autopilot) and smart parking.

To sweeten the deal, BYD is offering 18 months of free charging for those who place an order before its official launch.

The Datang isn’t the only new EV equipped with its new battery and charging tech that buyers are lining up for. BYD said the new Song Ultra secured over 60,000 orders in its first month on the market.

The new Song Ultra EV is available in four trims with prices ranging up to 179,900 yuan ($26,000). All variants are powered by BYD’s new Blade Battery 2.0. Two battery pack options are available: 68.4 kWh and 82.7 kWh, providing CLTC ranges of 605 km and 710 km, respectively.
