NASA’s Psyche asteroid probe will fly within 3,000 miles of Mars on May 15: Here’s what to expect
NASA’s asteroid-bound Psyche mission is headed for an encounter with Mars on Friday (May 15). The spacecraft, which is on its way to an asteroid also called Psyche, will come within around 2,800 miles (4,500 kilometers) of the Red Planet during the flyby. The aim of this flyby is to utilize the gravity of Mars to give Psyche a boost to its already impressive speed of 12,333 miles per hour (19,848 kph). This will enable the spacecraft to adjust its trajectory towards the 173-mile-wide (280 km) metal-rich asteroid 16 Psyche, (or just Psyche) which sits in the main asteroid belt…
A new Reuters investigation documents long wait times, surface-street-only routing, and near-zero vehicle availability across Tesla’s three-city “Robotaxi” service. These all look like convenience problems — but they’re really symptoms of a safety system that can’t scale. Elon Musk himself told investors at the Q1 2026 earnings call that safety validation is the limiting factor. The “convenience issues” riders are experiencing are the direct result of those safety constraints manifesting as a degraded user experience. What riders are actually experiencing Reuters reporters tested Tesla’s “Robotaxi” service across Austin, Dallas, and Houston over the past month, and the results paint a…
Scientists have uncovered a molecular “switch” in mice that turns on a hidden energy-burning system inside brown fat, a discovery that could eventually help researchers develop new treatments for bone disease. The findings, published in Nature, provide new insight into how brown fat works. Unlike white fat, which stores energy, brown fat burns calories to generate heat. Scientists long believed this heat production depended on a single biological pathway. In recent years, however, researchers identified a second pathway operating alongside the original one, but they did not know what activated it. A team led by Lawrence Kazak at McGill University’s…

Instructure strikes deal with hackers who breached it twice
Instructure, the maker of the popular school information portal Canvas, said on Tuesday it has “reached an agreement” with the hackers who breached its systems twice, stole a huge amount of student and staff data, and disrupted thousands of schools that rely on the company’s software. ShinyHunters, a financially motivated cybercrime group, took credit for the April 29 data breach, claiming to have stolen student and staff data, including the personal information, of a total 275 million people. The hackers said they had compromised Canvas, which nearly 9,000 schools use to manage their students’ data and coursework. The hackers last…
AI breakthrough could replace rare earth magnets in electric vehicles
Scientists at the University of New Hampshire are using artificial intelligence to speed up the search for advanced magnetic materials. Their work has produced a searchable resource containing 67,573 magnetic compounds, including 25 materials that had not previously been recognized as magnets capable of staying magnetic at high temperatures. “By accelerating the discovery of sustainable magnetic materials, we can reduce dependence on rare earth elements, lower the cost of electric vehicles and renewable-energy systems, and strengthen the U.S. manufacturing base,” said Suman Itani, lead author and a doctoral student in physics. A Massive Magnetic Materials Database The new resource, called…
