Scientists just sent unhackable quantum keys across 120 kilometers
Quantum key distribution (QKD) is widely considered the most advanced form of quantum cryptography, offering a path toward virtually unbreakable security for the future quantum internet. One promising technology behind these secure systems involves semiconductor quantum dots (SQDs), tiny solid-state light sources capable of generating high-quality single photons for quantum communication. These devices could help boost secure key generation rates while also supporting future quantum repeaters needed for large-scale quantum networks. Another important development is time-bin encoding, a technique that stores information in the arrival times of photons. This method is especially attractive for long-distance quantum communication because it is…

The hottest place for startups to strike a deal? The F1 paddock
Over cold drinks in the Florida heat, this TechCrunch reporter watched from the paddock as founders and investors — the rich and the richer — mingled in search of deals. Conversations barely paused, except for the occasional glance at the track where drivers, sealed inside multimillion-dollar machines, chased the checkered flag. F1 weekend is a three-day affair, with the race as the finale. In between are kickoffs, soirées, cocktail parties, dinners, and nightclub takeovers — spaces where business and pleasure blur. Events like this, where wealth concentrates, have historically been places where business deals are struck. But the popularity of…
Study finds ChatGPT gets science wrong more often than you think
Washington State University professor Mesut Cicek and his research team repeatedly tested ChatGPT by giving it hypotheses taken from scientific papers. The goal was to see if the AI could correctly determine whether each claim was supported by research or not — in other words, whether it was true or false. In total, the team evaluated more than 700 hypotheses and asked the same question 10 times for each one to measure consistency. Accuracy Results and Limits of AI Performance When the experiment was first conducted in 2024, ChatGPT answered correctly 76.5% of the time. In a follow-up test in…

Pentagon unveils trove of declassfied ‘UFO’ videos. How to see them all, from ‘a football-shaped body’ to ‘a misshapen and uneven ball of white light’
UFO enthusiasts just got a big old bone to sink their teeth into. The Pentagon released its first tranche of declassified “UFO files” on Friday (May 8), responding to a directive that President Trump issued in February. The new release consists of 161 files, most of which are PDFs recounting investigative reports and eyewitness testimonials (including from a few Apollo astronauts, who saw some strange things near the moon). But there’s also quite a bit of imagery, including nearly 30 videos, which feature a range of intriguing unidentified flying objects — or unidentified anomalous phenomena (UAP), as they were recently rebranded. Opel Says This EV Is A True Hot Hatch. The Specs Back It Up
Opel’s Corsa GSE turns the regular Corsa EV into a proper hot hatch with 277 hp and a 5.5-second sprint. A Torsen LSD, Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires, and upgraded brakes suggest Opel did more than just add power. Range remains unknown, but it has the same battery as the regular model, so it will be lower. Hot hatchbacks used to be very common, especially in Europe, but most manufacturers that used to make them have pulled the plug. But now it looks like they are coming back, albeit with electric power, and the most recent one is the Opel…
