Microsoft’s Majorana 2 quantum chip arrived this week with numbers that are genuinely difficult to contextualise: qubits 1,000 times more reliable than the first generation, a mean qubit lifetime of 20 seconds against an industry norm measured in microseconds, and a revised roadmap targeting a commercially scalable quantum computer by 2029. Behind those numbers is Microsoft Discovery agentic AI, and that platform is arguably the more consequential part of this announcement. To put that in plain terms: most quantum chips today can hold their fragile computational state for a fraction of a second before losing it. Majorana 2 holds it for up to…

New Delhi: India’s exports of refined petroleum products fell to about 930,000 barrels per day (bpd) in May, their lowest level since October 2022, as refinery maintenance, changing production priorities and stronger domestic demand curtailed overseas shipments. Exports declined to around 930,000 bpd, down to levels last seen when shipments averaged 926,000 bpd in October 2022, reflecting a combination of lower refinery throughput and a growing focus on supplying the domestic market, according to data analytics firm Kpler.”This sharp cutback was driven by a combination of lower refinery throughput, maintenance activity, and a structural pivot toward the domestic market,” said…

The court clarified that the GST valuation framework is not confined to any one segment but applies across betting and gambling activities. The ruling makes it clear that the tax framework cannot be read narrowly. “Rule 31A… applies broadly to all betting, gambling and horse racing… Limiting its applicability only to horse racing would render parts of the rule otiose,” a PwC India note on the SC ruling said.Nitin Vijaivergia, partner at Pricewaterhouse & Co LLP,…

NEW DELHI: The rebellion within the Trinamool Congress (TMC) has deepened over the past week, with rebel MLAs backing expelled leader Ritabrata Banerjee for the post of leader of opposition and drawing comparisons with Maharashtra’s Shiv Sena split. But a closer look suggests the revolt may be less about challenging Mamata Banerjee’s leadership and more about questioning the growing authority of her nephew and political heir, Abhishek Banerjee. At first glance, the developments appear to be a direct challenge to the TMC leadership. A group of rebel legislators has questioned the legitimacy of the party’s decision-making process, accused the leadership of fabricating…

A triple star system in which the stars all eclipse one another from our vantage point is standing out as one of the best studied stellar trios; as the stars age, they could even merge. The triple system, known as TIC 295741342, is 3,080 light-years from Earth and was found by NASA’s TESS (Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite) mission. It features a binary system composed of two stars almost identical to the sun, orbited by a larger third star of 1.7 solar masses.Triple star systems abound in the galaxy, but what makes TIC 295741342 more remarkable is that all three stars orbit…

MONTGOMERY, Ala.—For some incumbents, politics have turned sour in sweet home Alabama. In the May 26 primary election for two seats on the Public Service Commission, the state’s utility regulator, voters rejected one incumbent and sent another to a runoff.  The electoral shakeup comes as Alabamians are increasingly concerned about economic issues, including utility prices.
