Three-year-old Mach Industries has acquired solid rocket motor startup Exquadrum in a $50 million cash-and-equity deal, the Huntington Beach-based defense startup tells TechCrunch. Exquadrum — now rebranded as Mach Energetics — has been fully folded into Mach’s operations, giving it direct control over one of the most important, and constrained, components in modern unmanned systems. The deal itself started with a lucky break. The two companies first connected last September when an Exquadrum customer at an MIT recruiting event happened to overhear a Mach recruiter mention that the company was in the market for a solid rocket motor supplier. Day two of TechEx North America has been more of a deeper, critical examination of AI in the enterprise, but with a optimistic bent. The AI and Big Data programme opened with reference to what was termed the “AI graveyard” – that is, AI projects that seem to perform well in pilot, but don’t seem to cut it in the real world. Despite the presence of what might be a negative term, multiple speakers and sessions addressed ways in which the forward-thinking business might not ever have to experience the technological cemetery. The different show tracks of the second day of…

A breach widened in the oil and gas sanctions cordon around Russia on Tuesday, as Britain exempted imports of diesel and jet fuel made from Russia crude, but refined in third-party countries. It comes after the US extended a waiver that critics say allows the Kremlin to earn more money and fund the war in Ukraine. Russian oil is shipped to India, Turkey and other countries where it is refined and re-exported as their own product – complicating sanctions enforcement. The new rules take effect on Wednesday and will be of indefinite duration, though they will be reviewed periodically and…

NEW DELHI: Govt has notified a new standard for higher ethanol-petrol blends — E22, E25, E27 and E30 fuels — paving the way for blending of ethanol in petrol beyond the current 20% level. The govt push to increase ethanol blending comes amid reports of availability of surplus ethanol and to reduce crude imports due to the conflict in West Asia, which has impacted the energy supply chain. The new BIS standard, published on May 15, has laid down specifications for fuel blends made by mixing completely free-of-water (anhydrous) ethanol with motor gasoline for use in “positive ignition engine-powered vehicles”,…

WEST HILLS, Calif.—Her gray SUV packed and a fire-proof bag ready, Melissa Bumstead didn’t waste any time Monday as plumes of smoke engulfed the sky near her suburb. Most neighbors in West Hills—about 30 miles west of downtown Los Angeles—stayed put after only a voluntary “evacuation warning” was issued for the area. But not her.  As the ever-growing Sandy Fire swept across Southern California, the 45-year-old mother could only think of one thing.  Bumstead lives less than four miles from the site of possibly the worst nuclear meltdown in U.S. history besides the Three Mile Island accident.  Melissa Bumstead voluntarily…
