Trump Administration Kills Rule Putting Conservation of Public Lands on Equal Footing With Resource Extraction
The Trump Administration on Tuesday finalized its repeal of the Bureau of Land Management’s Conservation and Landscape Health Rule, better known as the Public Lands Rule, which gave conservation activities on federal land equal priority with extractive uses like mining and logging. It’s the latest in what is now a long series of decisions from the Trump administration to prioritize industry use of the nation’s public lands. Aspects of the rule, such as restoring degraded habitat and allowing developers to lease and protect intact public land to offset a project’s impacts on other public parcels, could inhibit resource extraction from…
Google is giving Android Auto a full refresh. The smartphone mirroring system will now automatically adapt to the shape of the car’s screen. This means no more black borders, even on round, trapezoidal, or odd-shaped displays. Android Auto, Google’s smartphone mirroring system that competes directly with Apple’s CarPlay, is getting a big overhaul. For the first time since its introduction 11 years ago, Android Auto will fill the entire screen of the car, no matter the display’s shape. The American tech giant showcased the new auto-adapting feature on a round Mini screen, the irregular display of a Lucid Air, and…
At under $49,000, VW’s ID.Buzz might FINALLY be priced right
Volkswagen aimed its all-electric ID.Buzz minivan squarely at an nostalgic baby boomer market that had aged out of $70,000 hippie nostalgia purchases by the time it arrived on US shores – but now VW that dealers are advertising the premium van for less than $49,000, VW’s new-age bus might be worth a second look. SKIP THE STORY: take me to the deal! After teasing a modern Bus for nearly two decades (the ID.Buzz was introduced as a concept at the 2017 Detroit Auto Show, and was the fourth Type 2 Bus- or Bulli-inspired concept from VW since 2001), Volkswagen had high hopes for…
Scientists found the “holy grail” gene that could one day help humans regrow limbs
Scientists studying axolotls, zebrafish, and mice have uncovered a shared set of genes that could someday help researchers develop therapies for regrowing human limbs. The findings, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, point to a possible new direction for regenerative medicine and gene therapy. “This significant research brought together three labs, working across three organisms to compare regeneration,” said Wake Forest Assistant Professor of Biology Josh Currie, whose lab studies the Mexican axolotl salamander. “It showed us that there are universal, unifying genetic programs that are driving regeneration in very different types of organisms, salamanders, zebrafish…

Google is rolling out a new opt-in feature in Android that aims to help security researchers investigate spyware attacks. The feature is called “Intrusion Logging” and is part of Android’s Advanced Protection Mode, which Google launched last year, an opt-in special security mode that enables certain features with the goal of making the device harder to hack. Advanced Protection Mode is designed to counter government spyware attacks and police forensic devices that try to extract data from a person’s phone. These two types of attacks can also be combined. In at least one documented case in Serbia, authorities used a…

Scientists create robots smaller than a grain of salt that can think
Researchers at the University of Pennsylvania and the University of Michigan have built the smallest fully programmable autonomous robots ever created. These microscopic machines can swim through liquid, sense their surroundings, respond on their own, operate for months at a time, and cost about one penny each to produce. Each robot is barely visible without magnification, measuring roughly 200 by 300 by 50 micrometers. That makes them smaller than a grain of salt. Because they function at the same scale as many living microorganisms, the robots could one day help doctors monitor individual cells or assist engineers in assembling tiny…

What started as a case on board a cruise ship on the high seas, soon became a global call for help. Atlantic cruise ship MV Hondius was the known location of the index case – soon there were seven cases. The three fatalities were a Dutch couple and a German national, and a British national was evacuated from the ship from Ascension and is being treated in South Africa. There were 150…
Counselling and psychological support are not add-ons in fertility care. They belong in the protocol. Image used for representational purposes only | Photo Credit: Getty Images Fertility medicine moves fast. Every year brings a new technique, a new technology, a new reason for hope. But after years of seeing couples through this process, I’ve stopped getting excited every time something new lands in our lab. The medical hurdles are only one part of what my patients are actually dealing with. The rest is family pressure, money, and the long, drawn-out stress of waiting to find out whether a cycle worked. India…
