AstraZeneca India and Andhra Pradesh have launched an AI-powered precision oncology ecosystem to improve early cancer detection and personalized care.

AI Cancer Detection in India: AstraZeneca Launches Precision Oncology Ecosystem

Imagine a future where cancer is detected earlier, treatment is tailored to each patient’s unique genetic profile, and Artificial Intelligence (AI) helps doctors make faster, more informed decisions. That future is beginning to take shape in India. In a major step toward modernizing cancer care, AstraZeneca India, in collaboration with the Government of Andhra Pradesh, has launched an integrated precision oncology ecosystem that combines AI, Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), and advanced genomics to support earlier detection, accurate diagnosis, personalized treatment, and long-term patient care. The initiative aims to make cutting-edge oncology technologies more accessible through the public healthcare system.
The integrated ecosystem is designed to connect the entire cancer care pathway—from screening and diagnosis to genomic testing, personalized treatment, and follow-up care. By embedding AI into routine clinical workflows, the initiative seeks to reduce diagnostic delays, expand access to precision diagnostics, and help clinicians make more informed, data-driven treatment decisions for patients.

How Will AstraZeneca’s AI Precision Oncology Ecosystem Improve Cancer Detection in India?

According to WHO, cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, accounting for nearly 10 million deaths in 2024, or nearly one in six deaths. Lung and breast cancers account for a significant proportion of cancer-related deaths, largely because many patients are diagnosed only after the disease has progressed to advanced stages.

By integrating AI across the patient journey, diagnostic delays can be reduced, access to precision diagnostics can be improved and clinicians can deliver personalised, data-driven cancer care.

AstraZeneca India will facilitate the deployment of Qure.ai‘s Artificial Intelligence-powered chest X-ray solution across selected government healthcare facilities to strengthen the early detection of lung cancer.

“Healthcare across the world is undergoing a fundamental transformation. Artificial Intelligence, genomics and data science are changing the way diseases are detected, diagnosed and treated. Our vision is to ensure that these technologies are not confined to a few advanced institutions but become accessible to every citizen through our public healthcare system,” said Chief Minister, Nara Chandrababu Naidu.

What Is India’s New Integrated Genomic Solutions Centre for Cancer Care?

Patients identified as high-risk will be systematically referred for confirmatory diagnosis and timely clinical intervention, significantly improving the chances of detecting cancer at an earlier and more treatable stage.

The Integrated Genomic Solutions Centre (IGSC) aims to significantly expand access to advanced genomic diagnostics for cancer patients.

“We are proud to collaborate with the Government of Andhra Pradesh in bringing globally recognised technologies—including Artificial Intelligence-assisted screening, advanced genomic diagnostics and integrated patient pathways—into the public healthcare system. Together, we are creating India’s first integrated precision oncology ecosystem, with the potential to improve outcomes for thousands of patients while serving as a scalable national model for the future of cancer care,” said Praveen Rao Akkinepally, Country President & Managing Director, AstraZeneca Pharma India Ltd.

How AI, Genomics, and Precision Medicine Are Transforming Cancer Treatment

The ecosystem integrates AI-assisted screening, genomic diagnostics, and coordinated patient pathways into a unified model designed to improve access to precision oncology within the public healthcare system. The initiative brings together advanced technologies that can support clinicians in identifying cancers earlier and selecting more personalized treatment strategies based on genomic insights.

Why This AI Cancer Care Initiative Could Shape the Future of Oncology in India

As healthcare increasingly embraces AI and precision medicine, initiatives like this demonstrate how technology can be integrated into public health systems to improve access to advanced diagnostics and personalized cancer care. By bringing together AI-assisted screening, genomic testing, and coordinated clinical pathways, the ecosystem represents an important milestone in India’s efforts to strengthen cancer diagnosis and treatment while creating a scalable model for the future of oncology services.
