APM announces massive electrification program for Port of NY and NJ

APM Terminals Elizabeth orders 96 Orange EV electric terminal tractors

96 electric terminal trucks from Orange EV, 34 electric rubber-tired gantry cranes from Konecranes, and massive investments in modernization and workforce development – and that’s just part of what APM Terminals Elizabeth is bringing to the Port of New York and New Jersey.

APM Terminals Elizabeth is a massive operation, moving nearly 30% of container traffic across the Port of New York and New Jersey and supporting more than 600 vessel calls and 800,000 truck loads each year. That kind of volume puts things like managing projections and minimizing downtime absolutely critical for the company’s long-term success – so, of course, they are doubling down on fleet electrification.

To that end, the port operator has placed orders for 96 Class 8 electric terminal tractors from Orange EV and 34 electric rubber-tired gantry cranes from Konecranes. That’s 110 new heavy-duty electric equipment assets, plus the associated charging infrastructure necessary to bring them online in the very near future.

“The future of Elizabeth depends on our willingness to invest today,” says Henrik Kristensen, Managing Director of APM Terminals Elizabeth. “These [orders] represent another important milestone in our modernization journey, helping us strengthen critical port infrastructure, enhance operational performance and prepare for future cargo growth. Modernization is about more than equipment and facilities. It is also about investing in our people. Together with our labor partners, we are building the capabilities, skills and expertise needed to support the next generation of terminal operations while keeping our workforce at the center of our success.”

As APM continues its electrification journey, the terminal is also working to ensure its workforce is ready for its new EVs. Working closely with regional labor partners, the operator is investing in training and operational capabilities needed to support the future of cargo handling at the Port of New York and New Jersey.

“Continued investment in terminal infrastructure is essential to ensuring the Port of New York and New Jersey remains competitive, efficient and prepared for future growth since our gateway is the economic heart of this region,” explains Bethann Rooney, Director of the Port Department of the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey. “Modern new electric equipment strengthens the capacity and reliability of our port facilities and moves us all toward greener operations that support the Port Authority’s sustainability goal of a net-zero future.”

Orange EV made headlines earlier this summer, after the electric truck brand delivered its 2,000th yard dog to a Coca-Cola bottling plant.
