Jon Moxley has seemingly spoiled one of AEW’s major plans. The promotion has now made an official announcement and has confirmed that Mox will be involved in this.
Last night on Dynamite, the leader of the Death Riders suddenly discussed some discussions going around backstage regarding a mystery tournament called the “Continental Cup”. He did not reveal much about it but mentioned how he had no clue who else would be entered into this tournament. Mox was also laser-focused and unfazed despite his title reign being in jeopardy.
Earlier tonight on AEW Collision, the Conglomeration also made mention of this, with Orange Cassidy, Roderick Strong, and Kyle O’Reilly revealing that after losing their world trios titles, they would put their focus on this upcoming tournament instead.
The promotion made an official announcement about this later in the night through the commentary team. Tony Schiavone revealed that the Continental Cup would be taking place as soon as next Saturday, with the winner being crowned at AEW All In: London next month.
Inspired by the English FA Cup, 16 competitors will enter the tournament, and the matchups will be decided in a completely random, draw-lots manner. The winner not only wins the AEW Continental Championship but will walk away with the Continental Cup, which will be theirs to keep. This will be a single elimination tournament.
Jon Moxley and the Conglomeration will be making up 4 of the 16 entrants, with the rest probably being surprise reveals. It was also confirmed that this will be the summertime tournament for the Continental title. The Continental Classic is still set to take place starting November.
This looks to be an interesting tournament with the matchups being at random. It seems that with these rules, there will be no brackets, and the competitors will draw their opponents right before each round of the torunament begins.
