The portfolio wasn’t assembled in one boardroom session. It grew out of a single licensing deal and decades of stubborn loyalty to ladder frames.
The Jeep licence that set the template
It started with assembly, not design. Mahindra began putting together Willys Jeeps shortly after independence, and the CJ3B formula outlasted most people’s expectations: ladder-frame chassis, leaf springs, part-time four-wheel drive, a body you could fix with a hammer and creative profanity.
That template became the company’s default engineering dialect. The Commander and Armada carried it forward without much argument. The Bolero, launched around the turn of the century, refined it into something a contractor could run for fifteen years without drama, the kind of vehicle where the mechanic already knows what’s wrong before you finish describing the noise.
Then came 2002 and the Scorpio. First vehicle Mahindra designed largely in-house. It kept the body-on-frame layout at a time when much of the world was sprinting toward monocoque cars-on-stilts, and that decision looked stubborn right up until it didn’t. Hardware choices that actually matter off road

- A low-range transfer case that multiplies torque at crawling speeds

The current Thar layers electronics over that mechanical base without replacing it. Brake-based traction control mimics a locking differential by clamping the spinning wheel. Terrain modes remap throttle response for sand, mud, and snow. Useful. Not magic.
The Roxx version added a longer wheelbase and five doors, which improves stability on gravel roads and sacrifices essentially nothing except tight-turn manoeuvrability on serious rock steps, a trade most buyers will never notice they made.
Here is the part people get wrong. Most buyers assume every Mahindra wearing SUV styling is built for this. They are half right, and that half matters quite a bit.
The XUV300 and XUV700 use monocoque platforms tuned for road comfort, which is exactly the right engineering call for what those vehicles actually do. The genuine off-road credentials sit with the ladder-frame family: Thar, Scorpio, Bolero, and their derivatives.
Validation, service reach, and the loop that feeds both
Testing is where the reputation was actually earned. Not in marketing decks. Prototypes spend months on pavé tracks and gradient rigs, cycling suspension and driveline components well beyond what a normal owner would inflict in a decade of use.
That influence shows up in successive model years in ways that don’t make press releases but absolutely show up in long-run reliability data. Where the portfolio falls short
Ladder frames cost you something real. Ride quality suffers on broken tarmac, body roll is present and accounted for, and fuel efficiency trails monocoque rivals at comparable size.
Older Thar cabins punished long-distance drivers, and three-door versions still make rear passengers work for basic dignity. Four-wheel-drive hardware also introduces maintenance points most owners forget entirely: transfer case oil, differential oil, until something starts whining at highway speeds on a Sunday evening.
The real question is whether any particular buyer actually needs this. Most owners never engage in low range. Not once.
For daily city use with occasional highway running, a rear-wheel-drive Scorpio or a two-wheel-drive Thar delivers the look and durability without the fuel penalty and the extra service intervals nobody remembers to book. Unused 4×4 systems seize. Bushings dry out without articulation cycles. The buyer ends up paying maintenance costs for hardware that never once justified itself.
Check the basics during inspection: chassis rust near the rear spring hangers, slop in the steering column, and whether the transfer case actually shifts cleanly during a test drive. Mahindra built these vehicles to survive neglect, which is precisely why so many used examples have received generous amounts of it.
