Voltpost Is Making A Charger For People Without A Driveway

    • Voltpost is releasing two new EV chargers.
    • Both products are meant to make retrofitting easy, which means apartment-dwellers may finally have a simple solution for EV charging.
    • The company says that its mounting methods cut install costs by as much as 70%.

There’s a little assumption that is seemingly baked into EV ownership advice: home charging. Most people assume that anyone buying an EV is just charging in their driveway. After all, most of the convenience and savings in EV ownership comes from home charging.

But relying on public fast charging can often prove to be nearly as expensive as filling up at the pump—plus, you can’t just wake up with a fully-juiced battery. That’s where a new idea from Voltpost is here to help.

Voltpost is best known for turning lampposts and telephone poles into EV chargers. Now it’s tackling the driveway problem by introducing two new Level 2 chargers into its Voltpost Air retrofitting portfolio.

First up is the company’s new Air Ceiling Mount that is purpose-built for parking garages. As the name implies, it attaches to the ceiling of a garage with hanging cables to maximize the space available for parking. It also introduced a new Air Surface Mount that attaches directly to walls (and, of course, pedestals). Voltpost says that this is aimed at bringing chargers to parking lots and curbside locations when a pole isn’t available—think the side of buildings or a pedestal bolted into pavement.

Both setups use a retractable cable to keep the charging hardware tidy and off the ground. But the real win, according to Voltpost, is how easy the chargers are to retrofit around infrastructure already in place. No ripping up sidewalks or trenching, just mount it on something already there, run some wires, and call it complete in hours rather than days. That approach cuts installation costs by as much as 70%, according to Voltpost.

Voltpost isn’t solving apartment or destination charging everywhere overnight. No charging company is. Building and lot owners still need to actually install these chargers (and somebody has to foot the bill). But saving some dough by bolting the chargers onto a building instead of trenching out a lot sure feels like a pretty good place to start.
