Apart from conventional BTech programmes, the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) have increasingly expanded their undergraduate offerings to include Bachelor of Science (BS) programmes in specialised fields.
The demand for graduates with expertise in areas such as data science, chemistry, mathematics, physics and aerospace technology continues to grow. Yet, compared with engineering degrees, BS programmes remain a less explored option among students.
IIT Madras launched its four-year BS in Data Science and Applications in 2021, marking a significant expansion of the institute’s undergraduate offerings beyond traditional engineering programmes. Since then, IITs have introduced BS programmes across a range of disciplines, combining academic rigour with opportunities for research, interdisciplinary learning and industry exposure.
