Hyundai goes big on India with 26 new models as it plots 100+ vehicle global offensive

Hyundai Motor is putting India at the centre of its next global growth push, with plans to launch or refresh more than 100 vehicles worldwide by 2030, including 26 products for the Indian market.

The South Korean automaker unveiled the strategy at its 2026 CEO Investor Day in Seoul on Wednesday as it looks to widen its presence across vehicle segments, expand its hybrid and extended-range electric vehicle offerings and counter growing competition from Chinese automakers, Bloomberg reported.

Of the more than 100 global launches and refreshes planned through 2030, Hyundai has earmarked 58 for North America, 49 for South Korea, 41 for Europe, 26 for India and 22 for China. The figures overlap because some vehicles will be sold across multiple markets.

For India, the strategy goes beyond a larger product lineup. Hyundai plans to expand its India factories to make 320,000 more vehicles a year by 2030 and source over 90% of the parts locally, supported by a network of more than 1,400 suppliers and over 900 domestic engineers.

26 products put India on Hyundai’s global map

Hyundai’s 26-product India pipeline builds on a roadmap announced by Hyundai Motor India last year, when it outlined plans to invest ₹45,000 crore through FY2030.

The programme includes seven new nameplates, entry into segments such as MPVs and off-road SUVs, and India’s first locally manufactured dedicated electric SUV. Hyundai also wants India to become its second-largest region globally and a key export hub.The company said India will receive an all-new electric SUV in the fourth quarter, designed and localised specifically for the country. It will feature a next-generation infotainment system and Level 2 assisted-driving technology. Hyundai will also introduce a new internal-combustion mid-size SUV in India.

The expansion comes as SUVs dominate India’s passenger vehicle market and automakers broaden their offerings across petrol, electric and other powertrains. Hyundai is targeting SUVs to account for 80% of its Indian sales by 2030.

100-plus models as Hyundai recalibrates its EV strategy

The global product offensive is not simply about adding more vehicles. It marks a shift in Hyundai’s approach to electrification.

Rather than betting exclusively on battery-electric vehicles, the automaker plans to offer a wider mix of powertrains, including hybrids and extended-range electric vehicles, or EREVs.

Hyundai expects electrified vehicles to account for 60% of global sales by 2030, up from 23% in 2025. It is retaining its target of selling 5.55 million vehicles globally in 2030.

The strategy is particularly aggressive in North America, where Hyundai plans to offer more than 10 hybrid models by 2030 and expects hybrids to make up about half of its regional sales.

That puts it in more direct competition with Toyota, whose established hybrid lineup has become a major advantage in the US market.

At the same time, Hyundai is preparing for markets where the transition to EVs is moving at different speeds. Chinese manufacturers such as BYD and Geely have expanded rapidly outside China with competitively priced electric vehicles, increasing pressure on established automakers.

Hyundai’s response is to give consumers more powertrain choices rather than commit to a single technology.

Seven new models in the next eight months

The first phase of the product offensive will arrive quickly.

Hyundai plans to introduce seven new vehicles over the next eight months, including the new Tucson, Tucson Hybrid, Ioniq 3 and its first Santa Fe EREV.

The Tucson and Tucson Hybrid are scheduled to begin launching in initial markets in the fourth quarter.

The Santa Fe EREV is planned for the first half of 2027 and is expected to deliver more than 600 miles, or roughly 966 km, of total range. It will be built at Hyundai’s Alabama facility in the US.

EREVs combine an electric motor and battery with a petrol engine that acts as a generator, providing an EV-like driving experience while reducing concerns over charging and range.

    India gets more manufacturing capacity

To support its expanded product portfolio, Hyundai plans to increase global production capacity by 1.27 million units by 2030.

North America will receive the biggest increase at 500,000 units, followed by India with 320,000, complete-knock-down assembly sites with 250,000 and South Korea with 200,000.

The investment reinforces India’s role as one of Hyundai’s key manufacturing and export bases. Hyundai Motor India had earlier set a target of contributing up to 30% of its production to exports by 2030.

Higher localisation could also help the company control costs and make India-produced vehicles more competitive in domestic and overseas markets.

New segments, from pickups to commercial vehicles

Hyundai is also moving into segments where it has traditionally had a limited presence.

The company plans to enter more than 18 new products and market segments globally by 2030, including body-on-frame vehicles, a midsize pickup and light commercial vehicles.

The strategy targets what Hyundai describes as market white spaces. These underrepresented segments account for about 29% of global automotive sales, according to the company.

Its performance N brand is also being expanded, with Hyundai targeting annual N sales of 100,000 vehicles by 2030.

    Genesis gets hybrids and EREVs

The product expansion will extend to Hyundai’s luxury Genesis brand.

Genesis is preparing its first hybrid model, the GV80 hybrid, while an extended-range electric vehicle is also planned. The Genesis EREV is expected to offer more than 1,000 km of combined range.

Genesis is targeting annual sales of 350,000 vehicles by 2030 as Hyundai seeks to build the luxury marque into a larger global business.

Hyundai is betting on robots too

The automaker’s expansion is not limited to vehicles.

Hyundai is also scaling its robotics operations through Boston Dynamics, the robotics company it owns.

The Robot Metaplant Application Center at Hyundai’s Georgia facility opened in June and is being used to train and analyse Atlas humanoid robots. Hyundai plans to expand the centre tenfold by the end of this year and accumulate more than 10,000 hours of robot-learning data.

The company expects robot production to begin in 2028, with annual capacity of 30,000 units.

Hyundai is also developing autonomous-driving technology and software-defined vehicles as part of its broader strategy to turn itself into what CEO José Muñoz described as a physical AI company.

“Our fundamentals have never been stronger. Hyundai Motor Group is the third-largest automotive group and the second-most profitable, which gives us the ability to invest while others are pulling back. We are bringing more than 100 new models to market by 2030 with multiple powertrain options and raising our operating margin above 9 percent. We are leveraging partnerships to scale new technologies and opportunities and becoming a physical AI company which will produce and deploy robots and robotaxis,” Muñoz said.

India becomes a bigger piece of Hyundai’s global puzzle

Hyundai’s latest strategy makes clear that India is being positioned as more than a large sales market.

The country will get a substantial share of Hyundai’s future product pipeline, while its manufacturing capacity and local sourcing are also set to expand significantly. The company is simultaneously seeking to turn India into a larger export base.

The result is a bigger role for India in Hyundai’s global product and manufacturing strategy as the automaker prepares for a market defined by multiple powertrains, tougher competition and faster-changing consumer demand.
