On a Tiny Scottish Island, Going on Safari and Finding a Wilder World Than I Imagined

We found a spot overlooking the pebbled beach and had barely begun unpacking our lavish picnic of finger sandwiches, salads, and cakes when a large, round head popped up directly in front of us in the sea. A seal, seemingly as curious about us as we were about him, floated upright in the water as we watched, delighted. No matter how many times I see them, there is something irresistibly charming about spotting seals in the wild. Before long, a second seal had hauled itself onto the shoreline, settling into the warm July sunshine to bask on the rocks. We carried on with our picnic under the watchful eye of our flippered companions, feeling rather as though we had stumbled into their private dining room.

    Then came the porpoises.

Porpoises spotted in the distant icy waters

A fin suddenly broke the surface of the water, followed by another. Their curved, dark bodies appeared and disappeared between the waves, moving almost imperceptibly through the current. Roddy explained that the waters around Ailsa Craig are a prime feeding ground, and watching the porpoises weaving through the sea just feet from where we sat felt like an entirely unscripted finale to the day.

It was this succession of encounters—thousands of seabirds overhead, seals bobbing beside our picnic, and porpoises gliding through the water—that made the experience feel so much more than a scenic boat trip. There was no guarantee of what we would see, no carefully choreographed wildlife encounter: the magic came from simply being in the right place at the right time.

And perhaps that is what makes Glenapp’s ocean safaris special. Luxury, here, isn’t about insulation from the wild, but about having the comfort, expertise, and access to experience it properly. From the elegance of Glenapp’s grounds to the raw drama of Ailsa Craig, it offers a reminder that some of the most spectacular wildlife experiences don’t require crossing continents. Sometimes, the adventure is waiting just off the coast of home.
