BTS Star V Reveals Hearing Problem After 2.5 Years

The singer also said he can hear only about 30 per cent with one ear, according to the report, and said this was the first time he had spoken publicly about the condition. For an artist whose career revolves around music, vocals and live performances, the disclosure has drawn attention to hearing health, an issue that can affect people of any age.

What Are the Main Types of Hearing Loss?

Hearing loss can affect one ear or both ears and can range from mild to profound. The World Health Organization (WHO) describes three broad categories of hearing loss: conductive, sensorineural and mixed.

Conductive hearing loss involves the outer or middle ear, while sensorineural hearing loss involves the inner ear. Mixed hearing loss combines features of both types.

WHO estimates that more than 1.5 billion people currently live with some degree of hearing loss worldwide. By 2050, nearly 2.5 billion people are projected to have some degree of hearing loss, while more than 700 million are expected to require hearing rehabilitation.

    What Causes Hearing Loss?

Hearing loss can have many causes across different stages of life. These include genetic factors, infections, chronic ear conditions, exposure to loud sounds, trauma and certain medicines that can affect hearing.

WHO also reports that more than 1 billion young people are at risk of permanent, avoidable hearing loss because of unsafe listening practices.

    Can Hearing Loss Be Prevented?

Many causes of hearing loss can be avoided through public health measures and appropriate clinical interventions. WHO notes that prevention can include measures across the life course, particularly for people exposed to loud sounds or other factors that can damage hearing.

In children, WHO states that around 60 per cent of hearing loss is due to preventable causes. Early identification and appropriate management are important once hearing loss has been detected.

    How Is Hearing Loss Treated?

Treatment depends on the cause and severity of hearing loss. Depending on the condition, management may include medicines or procedures, hearing aids, cochlear implants or other forms of hearing rehabilitation.

For V, the specific cause and medical diagnosis behind his hearing difficulties have not been publicly identified in the supplied report. What he has shared is that the problem has continued for around two and a half years and that he is receiving medical treatment.

His disclosure brings wider attention to a common health concern while also showing why hearing problems should not be ignored. With appropriate assessment, management and rehabilitation when needed, people with hearing difficulties can receive support to maintain communication and participate fully in everyday life.
