Lilly Sues Six Companies Over Illegal Retatrutide Sales

Can an experimental obesity drug that has not been approved by any regulator legally be sold directly to consumers?
Eli Lilly has filed six federal lawsuits against US companies it accuses of marketing unauthorized products claiming to contain retatrutide. The businesses include compounding pharmacies, medical spas and online peptide sellers.

Retatrutide remains an investigational drug. It can currently be administered to participants in authorized clinical trials but cannot be lawfully marketed as an approved weight-loss treatment.

Six Companies Named in Lilly’s Lawsuits

The lawsuits name Aesthetic Envy Cosmetic Centers, Astra LLC, Legendary Peptides, Striker Pharmacy, Texas Peptides and Lone Star Peptide Co.

Lilly alleges that the companies marketed retatrutide products to consumers even though the medicine remains under clinical development. Some sellers allegedly described their products as being intended only for research while providing them in circumstances suggesting human use.

The cases have been filed in federal courts in California and Texas. The allegations have not yet been proven in court, and the filing of a lawsuit does not establish liability.

Retatrutide Has Not Been Approved for Human Use

Retatrutide is a once-weekly investigational injection designed to activate receptors for glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide, glucagon-like peptide-1 and glucagon. These hormones influence appetite, glucose regulation and energy metabolism.

The drug is being studied in Phase 3 clinical trials for obesity, type 2 diabetes and related conditions. Although clinical studies have reported substantial weight reductions, no regulatory authority has approved a retatrutide-containing medicine for human use.(1✔ ✔Trusted Source

Products sold online under the retatrutide name are therefore not approved versions of a Lilly medicine and should not be assumed to contain the investigational drug used in clinical trials.

FDA Says Retatrutide Cannot Be Compounded

The US Food and Drug Administration states that retatrutide cannot be used in compounding under federal law. It is not an ingredient in any FDA-approved medicine and has not been found safe and effective for any medical condition.

Compounded medicines are not reviewed by the FDA for safety, effectiveness or manufacturing quality before marketing. With unauthorized retatrutide products, regulators may also be unable to verify their identity, purity, concentration, sterility or storage conditions.

The FDA has warned companies against selling products containing retatrutide directly to consumers, including products labelled “for research purposes” or “not for human consumption” when they are clearly intended for people.

Unverified Injections May Carry Serious Risks

An unauthorized product may contain too much, too little or none of the advertised ingredient. It could also contain another substance or become contaminated during manufacturing, packaging or transport.

Incorrect strength or unclear dosing instructions may increase the likelihood of medication errors. Products requiring refrigeration can also lose quality when shipped or stored under unsuitable conditions.

Lilly Chief Medical Officer Dr David Hyman said products sold through the black market are unverified and should not be treated as legitimate medicines.

The company’s statements concern products sold outside its clinical-trial program and do not establish the composition or safety of any specific product without laboratory testing.

Weight-Loss Demand Drives Unauthorized Online Sales

Growing demand for weight-loss medicines has encouraged online sellers to promote unauthorized injections through websites, social media, medical spas and businesses presenting themselves as healthcare providers.(2✔ ✔Trusted Source

Lilly said it has referred more than 200 individuals and organizations to the FDA, US Department of Justice, state attorneys general, law-enforcement agencies and professional licensing boards.

The company has also asked social-media platforms, online marketplaces, payment processors, credit-card providers and shipping companies to block sellers of unauthorized retatrutide products.

US Authorities Report Rising GLP-1 Seizures

US Customs and Border Protection intercepted more than 690 shipments containing over 31,000 units of illicit GLP-1 products during the 2025 fiscal year, the agency told Reuters.

In July 2026 alone, authorities reportedly recorded more than 1,400 seizures involving nearly 90,000 vials. The figures cover illicit GLP-1 products generally and are not limited to retatrutide.

The sharp increase highlights how demand for obesity treatments has expanded markets for unapproved, counterfeit and falsely labelled products.

Clinical Results Do Not Make Online Products Safe

Retatrutide has generated widespread interest because clinical trials have reported substantial weight loss. However, those results apply only to the investigational medicine manufactured for controlled studies and administered under research protocols.

Participants in clinical trials receive verified medication, carefully managed doses, medical screening and safety monitoring. Products purchased through unauthorized sellers do not provide the same assurances.(2✔ ✔Trusted Source

Promising trial results therefore do not establish that a product promoted online as retatrutide is genuine, sterile, correctly dosed or safe.

Consumers Should Use Approved Treatment Channels

People seeking obesity treatment should consult a qualified healthcare professional and obtain prescription medicines from licensed pharmacies.

Warning signs for an unsafe online seller include supplying injectable medication without a prescription, offering unusually low prices, making claims that a product is identical to an approved drug or using packaging without clear manufacturer, pharmacy and dosing information.

Consumers should not purchase products marketed as retatrutide for personal use. Suspected illegal sales, adverse reactions or product-quality problems can be reported to the FDA through its MedWatch program.
