The 10 Best Road Trips on the East Coast for Every Season

    Start: Boston, Massachusetts

    End: Provincetown, Massachusetts

    Our favorite season: Summer

You don’t have to identify as LGBTQ+ to appreciate this road trip, but there’s no better place to explore the history, culture, and enduring influence of America’s queer community than Massachusetts. The Bay State has long been a national trailblazer, electing the country’s first openly gay state legislator in 1974 and becoming the first state to legalize same-sex marriage three decades later. Boston remains one of America’s most welcoming cities, while Provincetown, perched at the very tip of Cape Cod, has spent generations cultivating its reputation as one of the world’s most celebrated LGBTQ+ destinations—at once an artists’ colony, beach resort, and cultural haven. It also has more same-sex couple households per capita than any municipality or ZIP code in the United States.

While Beantown and P-town are connected by seasonal high-speed ferries, the 115-mile drive along U.S. Route 6 is well worth your time. You won’t find the drag shows and Tea Dances that define this trip’s bookends, but along the curling bicep of Cape Cod (the first of many impressive biceps you’ll encounter on this trip), you’ll discover salty sea breezes, windswept beaches, lavender fields, fresh lobster rolls, before the road reaches one of America’s most joyful little towns.

Where to Stop: Before leaving Boston, consider a stroll along the Equality Trail, which commemorates people and places central to the city’s LGBTQ+ history. Then hit the road. Break up the drive in Plymouth for the obligatory stop at America’s most famous rock. It’s one of those landmarks everyone should see once, even if it’s much smaller than most people imagine. Continue to Cape Cod Lavender Farm in Harwich to pick lavender and browse house-made products, then join the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy off Chatham for a research expedition tracking great white sharks. In Wellfleet, harvest and shuck your own oysters before stopping at Truro Vineyards for wines and spirits crafted from maritime-grown grapes and local botanicals.

Give yourself at least two nights in Provincetown because this is where the itinerary truly comes alive. Ride through the towering dunes of the Cape Cod National Seashore with Art’s Dune Tours or set out with Dolphin Fleet Whale Watch. As afternoon rolls around, join the legendary Boatslip Tea Dance, an enduring LGBTQ+ tradition that has brought the community together overlooking Provincetown Harbor for decades. Later, catch a drag performance at the Crown & Anchor or Post Office Café before making your way to A-House. End the night on a bench outside Town Hall, where Commercial Street provides some of the best people-watching anywhere. Or linger outside Spiritus Pizza long enough and you’ll watch even the fittest beach bodies surrender to a late-night slice.

Where to Eat: After consulting our Boston dining guide, reserve a table at Kaia for standout Aegean cooking before heading to Desnuda, the Latin-Asian-inspired listening bar pairing inventive cocktails, globally inspired small plates, and vinyl spinning late into the night.

Around mid-Cape along Cape Cod, Love Farms in Dennis celebrates the region’s agricultural bounty with dishes built around ingredients grown on its working farm and neighboring producers. For a special dinner, reserve Lune, the husband-and-wife-run restaurant that earned a James Beard Award semifinalist nod in 2025 with its ever-changing menu.

Once in Provincetown, make Sal’s Place your first dinner reservation. Since 1962, the waterfront institution has been serving classic Italian comfort food, from generous bowls of vongole loaded with Cape Cherrystone clams to beef tenderloin au poivre, all paired with the kind of old-school hospitality that never goes out of style. Then arrive early at Provincetown Portuguese Bakery before the favorites disappear, and save room for The Canteen’s quarter-pound lobster roll, clam chowder, calamari accordions, and crispy Brussels sprouts overlooking Cape Cod Bay.

Where to Stay: In Boston, you don’t need a special LGBTQ+ designation to feel welcome. The city’s inclusive spirit extends to its best hotels, whether you choose the intimacy of The Whitney Hotel, ultra-luxury at Raffles Boston, or The Liberty Hotel,a Luxury Collection Hotel, a brilliant reimagination of the former Charles Street Jail turned five-star landmark.

In Provincetown, the recently refreshed Gifford House places you squarely in the gay thick of it all with nightlife on-site. For a stay that speaks more to Provincetown as a destination, book Sleep at Sal’s, a six-unit waterfront retreat centered around Sal’s Place. Somewhere between a boutique hotel, beach house, and homestay, it includes nightly dinners, direct beach access, and the kind of old-school hospitality that has guests planning their return visit before they’ve even checked out.
