Batting .287 with 23 home runs and 70 RBIs, Willson Contreras has been one of the Boston Red Sox’s standout players this season.

Even when the team was playing poorly, the first baseman was one of the most consistent performers on the roster, and he has kept that going while the team has gained momentum in recent weeks.

Despite all this, however, he was booed by Red Sox fans during a game against the Athletics on Saturday, as he did not hustle to first base for a routine groundout in the eighth inning.

Popular content page “Jomboy Media” shared a clip of the incident to X.

“Willson Contreras was booed by Red Sox fans for not hustling to first on a groundout to third,” the post was captioned.

Reacting, many fans on social media called out the Fenway Park crowd for being “ungrateful,” considering how well the Red Sox have been playing of late and how important Contreras has been this season.

“Most ungrateful losers to ever exist,” a fan wrote.

“The fans should be ashamed of themselves, acted like entitled pricks,” another fan commented.

“Haven’t they won 27 out of 30? Booing anyone at this point seems ungrateful,” another fan replied.

“Shows the IQ of sports fans let alone this fanbase in particular😂,” another fan responded.

“Sh**** a** fans, I know we lost to a horrible team but he’s been our best player all year wtf,” another fan shared.

“Yeah idk about this one. The team’s been basically unbeatable. Willson’s been the best hitter on the team all year. He’s been out sick for three straight days. C’mon now,” another fan posted.

“Under the weather, improving a bit” – Red Sox manager offers update on Willson Contreras’ illness

A major factor that is likely preventing Willson Contreras from giving 100% on the field is that he is playing through illness.

The Venezuelan exited Wednesday’s game with dizziness and high temperature, sitting out two games before returning to the lineup on Saturday.

Speaking to MLB.com’s Ken Powtack on Thursday, Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy offered an update on Contreras’ condition.

“Still feeling sick,” Tracy said. “Under the weather, improving a bit. Just resting. The fever is not real high,” Tracy added. “Just some symptoms that started popping up [Wednesday night], you could see it getting worse.”

Despite looking slightly off the pace from a physical standpoint, Contreras did show quality at the plate on Saturday, managing to register a hit in one of his five at-bats.
