Revealed in a new filing from China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT), the new VW ID. ERA 5X electric SUV is the first pure BEV on the brand’s new Compact Main Platform (CMP) platform.
The unexpected reveal of the new VW ID. ERA 5X came late Friday night, when the MIIT published its latest batch of vehicle filings. Volkswagen quickly followed with a set of official images and a small taste (more of a teaser, really) of additional specs, giving us our first good look at the new SUV and confirming that it will be the first production model built on SAIC VW’s new CMP (for “Compact Main Platform”).
VW ID. ERA 5X
Co-developed with Chinese brand XPeng and equipped with technology from the CEA (China Electronic Architecture), the CMP platform under the ID. ERA 5X is powered by a 155 kW (~205 hp) electric motor from by United Automotive Electronic Systems drawing power from a lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery from CATL. Battery specs and range were not revealed.
But, while we don’t know much about the battery or pricing, we do have some pretty accurate dimensions. The new ID. ERA 5X is 4,560 mm (179.5″) long, 1,896 mm (74.6″) wide, and a 1,630 mm (64.2″) tall body riding on a 2,815 mm (110.8″) wheelbase. For those of you keeping score, that puts the 5X in about the same size category as the Jeep Compass or Mazda CX5.
The MIIT filing also reveals that 5X buyers will have a choice of 17, 18, or 19″-inch” wheels, along with a number of optional lighting elements, bumper and side window trims, body color or black painted roofs (available with a panoramic sunroof), and the requisite roof racks and rails.
Inside, CarNewsChina reports that the ID. ERA 5X will be equipped with a new LiDAR system and the company’s new “Xingyun” intelligent assisted driving tech, enabling what the company calls “true end-to-end L2++ Urban NOA (Navigate on Autopilot) capabilities.” Inside, the vehicle will feature the “Yunqi” smart cockpit first seen in other ID. ERA concepts, designed to provide a more convenient and efficient human-machine interaction experience.
