A family visit to Cefn Sidan Beach in Wales ended with 27-year-old Sam Knight requiring specialist treatment after he stepped on sand heated by a disposable barbecue. Burn specialists warn that sand can retain enough heat to cause serious injuries even after a barbecue has been removed.

Hot Sand Beneath Beach BBQ Leaves Man With Third-Degree Burns

Can sand remain hot enough to cause a serious injury after a disposable barbecue has been extinguished and removed?
A 27-year-old man suffered burns reported as third-degree after unknowingly stepping on dangerously hot sand during a family visit to Cefn Sidan Beach in Carmarthenshire, Wales.

Sam Knight had used tongs to move the disposable barbecue and extinguished it after the family finished cooking. Believing that the area was safe, he later walked barefoot across the same patch of sand.

“The patch of sand it had been on was still boiling,” Knight said. The pain was immediate, and family members had to carry him away from the beach.

He was initially taken to the Minor Injury Unit at Neath Port Talbot Hospital before being referred to the specialist Burns Centre at Morriston Hospital because of the depth of his injuries.
According to the Swansea Bay University Health Board, Knight was unable to walk normally or work for two weeks.

Hot Sand Can Cause Burns Long After the Barbecue Is Removed

Disposable barbecues generate intense heat that can pass directly into the surface beneath them. When one is placed on sand, the surrounding grains can absorb and retain that heat even after the flames have gone out and the barbecue has been moved.

The danger is difficult to recognize because the affected sand may look identical to the cooler sand around it. There may be no smoke, flame or visible warning that the surface remains hot enough to burn bare skin.(1✔ ✔Trusted Source

Knight later returned to the beach and conducted his own experiment. He compared a barbecue placed directly on the sand with another raised above it.

The sand beneath the directly placed barbecue became extremely hot, while raising the second barbecue substantially reduced the heat transferred to the ground.

Deep Foot Burns Require Specialist Treatment

Third-degree burns, also known as full-thickness burns, damage the entire depth of the skin and may affect deeper tissue. These injuries can sometimes appear white, brown, blackened or leathery.

The seriousness of a burn cannot always be judged by pain alone because deep burns may damage nerve endings. The NHS 111 Wales guidance on burns recommends hospital assessment for deep burns, burns that produce white or charred skin and burns affecting the feet, hands, face, joints or genital area.(1✔ ✔Trusted Source

Foot burns are particularly concerning because they can make walking difficult and are repeatedly exposed to pressure, friction and possible contamination.

Deep injuries may require specialist dressings, pain management, infection monitoring or skin-graft surgery.

Experts Warn That the Heat May Be Invisible

Burn specialists say injuries from heated beach sand are preventable but can have long-lasting consequences. Beachgoers may assume an area is safe once a disposable barbecue has been removed, although the sand beneath it can remain dangerously hot.

Swansea Bay University Health Board physiotherapist David Fligelstone, who has experience working with burn patients and as an RNLI lifeguard, warned that “the danger is often invisible.”

Children may be especially vulnerable because they frequently walk barefoot and may not recognize a recently used barbecue area. Pets can also suffer burns after walking over heated sand.(1✔ ✔Trusted Source

Safe Use of Disposable Barbecues at the Beach

Disposable barbecues should never be placed directly on sand. Beachgoers should check local restrictions and use only authorized barbecue areas where available.

    Important precautions include:

    • Place the barbecue on a stable, heat-resistant stand raised above the sand.
    • Keep children and pets away from the barbecue and the ground beneath it.
    • Supervise the barbecue continuously while it is burning.
    • Allow it to cool completely before moving or disposing of it.
    • Use a designated disposable-barbecue bin when one is available.
    • Never bury a barbecue, hot coals or ashes beneath the sand.
    • Do not cover hot materials with sand because this can trap heat underneath.
    • Thoroughly cool the affected ground with water and keep people away until it is safe.
    • Avoid walking barefoot around places where barbecues have recently been used.

The RNLI advises beachgoers not to bury or cover used barbecues with sand because doing so can trap heat and injure other people.

What to Do Immediately After a Burn

Quick first aid can limit further skin damage. The affected area should be placed under cool or lukewarm running water for 20 minutes as soon as possible.

Clothing, footwear and jewelry near the burn should be removed unless they are stuck to the skin. After cooling, the injury can be covered loosely with cling film or a clean, non-fluffy dressing.(1✔ ✔Trusted Source

Ice, iced water, butter, oil, toothpaste and other creams should not be applied because they may worsen the injury or complicate treatment. Blisters should not be deliberately burst.

Deep burns and all significant burns affecting the feet require prompt medical assessment. Severe injuries, signs of shock or extensive burns may require emergency assistance. The South West Burns Clinical Network summarizes burn first aid as “cool, call and cover.”

Simple Precautions Can Prevent Serious Beach Injuries

Knight shared his experience to warn other beachgoers about a hazard he had not previously considered. His injury shows that extinguishing and removing a disposable barbecue does not necessarily eliminate the danger.

Raising barbecues above the ground, cooling the surrounding area thoroughly and disposing of equipment responsibly can help prevent severe burns.

Beachgoers should treat any recently used barbecue site as potentially dangerous, even when there are no visible flames or smoke.
