GTA 6 on Xbox isn’t region-locked unlike the PS5 version

We have a situation developing around GTA 6 on Xbox and PS5 that is worth understanding before pre-ordering, especially for anyone buying internationally, importing a copy, or simply shopping wherever the price happens to be lowest. The difference between how the two platforms handle regional codes is meaningful, and it could affect whether a purchased copy is even redeemable depending on where the account is registered.

It is a practical purchasing issue, and it is the kind of thing that is easy to overlook until it is too late to do anything about it.

Note: Some parts of this article are subjective and based on the writer’s views.

    GTA 6 PS5 region-locking explained

The core of the issue pertains to how GTA 6 physical copies are structured. As confirmed, the physical edition of GTA 6 is a box containing a download code rather than a disc. That detail matters a great deal on PS5.

Sony’s digital games and DLC have always been tied to PSN regions, meaning a code purchased or imported from one country may not be redeemable on an account registered in another. If the regional PSN account does not match the code’s region of origin, there is a genuine possibility the code simply will not work.

That creates a real problem for a game where the physical edition is nothing more than a code in a box. There is no disc to fall back on. If the code does not redeem, the purchase is effectively useless without creating a secondary account in the correct region, which is an additional layer of complication that most buyers would not expect to deal with.

PSN is officially available in only select countries, and the current Japan-exclusive GTA 6 physical copies limited-time download codes are creating another issue. This regional restriction is not just a general concern but an active and dated limitation that adds pressure to get the redemption right the first time.

Why Xbox handles this differently for GTA 6

GTA 6 on Xbox Series X/S appears to be considerably more straightforward on this front, as the game codes on Xbox can be redeemed worldwide, without the regional account restrictions that apply on the PS5 side. For players who buy games internationally, want a specific edition from another market, or are simply looking for the best price regardless of region, the Xbox version offers a meaningfully cleaner experience at the point of redemption.

Microsoft has generally taken a more flexible approach to regional code redemption compared to Sony, and in the case of GTA 6, where the physical edition is entirely code-based on both platforms, that difference becomes considerably more relevant than it would be for a standard disc release.
