As UK PM Andy Burnham unveils sweeping social care reforms, the husband of former GMTV presenter Fiona Phillips says her Alzheimer’s journey shows exactly why the promise matters.

Fiona Phillips` Husband Calls on PM Burnham to Deliver Alzheimer`s Care Promise

The husband of former GMTV presenter Fiona Phillips has urged UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham to follow through on his newly announced pledge to overhaul Britain’s social care system, as Phillips continues her advanced-stage battle with early-onset Alzheimer’s disease (1✔ ✔Trusted Source

    ).
Martin Frizell shared a photo of Phillips on Instagram on Wednesday, saying Burnham’s plans had “cheered up our morning,” and calling on the new PM to make “a difference to sufferers like Fiona, his dad and millions of others.” He added then Burnham will become the most consequential politician of his generation

Fiona Phillips’ Alzheimer’s Journey Since Her 2023 Diagnosis

Phillips, 65, best known for hosting ITV’s breakfast programme GMTV, revealed her early-onset Alzheimer’s diagnosis publicly in July 2023, a year after being diagnosed at age 61. Both her parents also had Alzheimer.

She and Frizell, former editor of ITV’s This Morning, met as roving reporters for GMTV and married in 1997. The couple have two adult sons, Nathaniel and Mackenzie. In 2025, Phillips published a memoir, Remember When: My Life With Alzheimer’s, co-written with Frizell and journalist Alison Phillips.

Frizell has described his wife’s condition candidly, previously telling The Telegraph: “It’s like someone has passed… bit by bit, she’s not there.”

Andy Burnham’s Social Care Reform Plans Explained

Burnham, whose own father has Alzheimer’s, used a visit to a care home in Golders Green this week to announce accelerated plans for a National Care Service, modelled on the NHS. He has hinted at tax rises to fund the reforms and said carers should be among the “best-paid” workers in the country.

Health and Care Secretary Yvette Cooper said the current system leaves “too many older and disabled people” let down, while millions of unpaid carers “shoulder an enormous burden every day.” The government’s plan includes accelerating Baroness Louise Casey’s independent review of social care, alongside a public “Big Conversation on Care” consultation inviting people across the UK to weigh in on reform.

Notably, Phillips herself came close to entering government on this very issue. Frizell revealed that former PM Gordon Brown once asked her to serve as a health minister.

The UK’s Growing Dementia Crisis, in Numbers

Around 70,000 people in the UK live with early-onset Alzheimer’s, and roughly a million have some form of Alzheimer’s disease overall. Dementia deaths in the UK are now at their highest levels on record, with the condition killing twice as many women as men each year.

Frizell has been vocal about the lack of support available, telling The Telegraph: “You realise that there’s not a lot of help out there… there’s just nothing really.”

    Andy Burnham’s Take

Burnham has committed to reporting back with a concrete plan for a National Care Service within the next year. Whether that timeline holds and whether it translates into real change for families like Phillips and Frizell’s — remains to be seen. For now, Frizell says the pledge alone has offered something families affected by Dementia and Alzheimer haven’t had in years. A genuine hope.
