Heatwaves across Europe, Asia and Africa are placing growing pressure on people, healthcare systems, wildlife and livelihoods.

A relentless heatwave is sweeping across parts of Europe, Asia and Africa, causing deaths, overwhelming health services, increasing wildfire risks and threatening animals traditionally adapted to some of the world’s hottest environments.
France has reported thousands of excess deaths, Japan is treating record numbers of people for heat-related illness, and reports from Africa suggest that even desert camels are suffering injuries and dying as temperatures rise.

France’s Heatwave Leaves a Deadly Toll
France recorded 5,764 excess deaths between June 17 and July 2, 2026, when much of the country was affected by extreme heat.
Public Health France recorded 21,674 deaths from all causes during the period, compared with approximately 15,910 that would normally have been expected—a 36% rise in mortality.
Excess deaths refer to the difference between the number of deaths observed and the number expected under normal conditions. They do not mean that every additional death was individually certified as being caused by heat, but they can reveal the wider impact of an extreme event on a population.
Older adults were among the most severely affected, while the Paris region recorded nearly 2,000 more deaths than expected. The period represented France’s highest heatwave-associated excess mortality since the devastating summer of 2003.

Japan’s Sweltering Heat Pushes Hospitals to the Limit
Japan has also faced dangerously high temperatures, with the government introducing the term “brutally hot day” for days when temperatures reach or exceed 40°C.
Tokyo emergency services treated 453 people for heat-related illnesses in a single day, the highest daily total since records began 16 years earlier. Reports said at least 14 people had died during the preceding week.
Official data also showed that 4,580 people were taken to hospital across Japan between July 6 and 12, including seven who later died. Authorities urged residents to use air conditioning, drink water regularly and avoid spending long periods outdoors.
Heatstroke can develop when the body can no longer control its temperature. Confusion, fainting, hot skin, seizures and loss of consciousness are medical emergencies requiring immediate treatment.

Heat Alerts and Wildfire Threats Spread Across Europe
The UK Health Security Agency issued yellow heat-health alerts for several parts of England, including London, the Midlands, the East and the South, as temperatures were forecast to approach 30°C.
The alerts warned of increased pressure on health and social-care services, particularly among older people and those with existing illnesses. Prolonged dry conditions were also increasing drought and wildfire concerns.
France, Spain and other parts of southern Europe have faced major wildfires during the extreme heat. More than 80,000 people were ordered to evacuate as fires spread across south-west France and Spain.
The World Meteorological Organization reported that western Europe experienced its hottest June on record. Barcelona’s Fabra Observatory recorded 40.5°C on July 8, its highest temperature in more than a century of observations.
Even Desert Camels Are Reaching Their Heat Limit
Camels are highly adapted to dry environments, but prolonged heat, drought and disappearing vegetation are placing them under growing stress across parts of Africa.
Herders in Ethiopia’s Afar region reported camels developing blistered feet, watery eyes, hair loss and burned skin. One herder reportedly lost eight camel calves within a month as extreme temperatures intensified.
Camels can tolerate high temperatures for limited periods, but continuous day-and-night heat reduces their ability to recover. Lack of water, shade, food and veterinary care can further increase dehydration, disease and mortality.
These losses also threaten families that depend on camels for milk, transport, income and survival in drought-prone regions.
Why Extreme Heat Becomes a Silent Killer
Heatwaves are often described as silent disasters because their health effects may not be immediately visible.
Prolonged exposure can overwhelm the body’s ability to cool itself, leading to dehydration, heat exhaustion and heatstroke. Extreme heat can also worsen heart disease, kidney disease, diabetes, respiratory illness and some mental-health conditions.
Warning signs of heat-related illness include:
- Heavy sweating and intense thirst
- Headache, dizziness or weakness
- Muscle cramps
- Nausea or vomiting
- Rapid heartbeat or breathing
- Confusion, fainting or seizures
Older adults, infants, outdoor workers, pregnant women, people with chronic illnesses and those without access to cooling are particularly vulnerable.
The World Health Organization estimates that approximately 489,000 heat-related deaths occurred annually between 2000 and 2019, with Asia and Europe accounting for most of the burden.
Climate Change Is Turning Heatwaves Into Deadlier Disasters
Human-driven climate change is making heatwaves more frequent, longer and more intense. Europe has warmed rapidly, increasing the likelihood that record-breaking temperatures will occur more often.
“Heatwaves like this are what we expect to see in a changing climate,” said John Kennedy, head of climate information at the World Meteorological Organization.
Reducing the health impact will require reliable early-warning systems, cooler homes and workplaces, shaded public areas, accessible drinking water, stronger healthcare preparedness and special protection for vulnerable communities.
The growing toll across France, Japan and Africa shows that extreme heat is no longer simply a seasonal inconvenience. It is becoming a major global health, environmental and economic threat.
