Expressing alarm over growing instances of adolescent pregnancy and demanding immediate release of pending social security pension, members of the All India Mahila Samsrutik Sanghatan (AIMSS) submitted a memorandum to Deputy Commissioner of Dharwad on Friday.

The protestors first staged a demonstration in front of the Deputy Commissioner’s office and subsequently submitted memorandum in this regard. District president of AIMSS Madhulata Goudar, secretary Gangubai Kokare, district committee members led the protest.

In the memorandum, the AIMSS stated that in the last two to three years, the district recorded significant number of cases of adolescent pregnancy, which was shocking. At a time when instances of abduction of young girls were being reported, cases of adolescent girls getting pregnant because of sexual exploitation by relatives and acquaintances were a cause of concern. Vulgarity in films and menace of liquor and substance abuse were adding to the problem, the AIMSS stated.

They have said that as per the data on the RCH (Reproductive Child Health) portal, in the cases of adolescent pregnancies, young girls in the age group of 14 to 18 were more. The recent instances of minor girls giving birth to babies and the newborns being given for adoption had given room for suspicion of the existence of a racket selling children, the AIMSS stated.

The office-bearers urged Deputy Commissioner Snehal R. to take immediate remedial and preventive measures and demanded strict punishment to the accused in such cases.

Through the memorandum, they urged the official to immediately release social security pension of elderly persons, widows and physically challenged, which they said, had been stopped.
