From Assam to Nilgiri: How regional teas are becoming premium brands

India’s tea industry is undergoing a quiet transformation. For decades, most consumers bought tea based on price, familiarity or brand loyalty. Today, a growing number are looking beyond the label to discover where their tea comes from, how it is made and what makes it different. As per a recent ET report, speciality tea market has tripled to ₹1,000 crore in five years, driven by Gen Z and millennials. This shift is helping regional teas from Assam, Darjeeling, Nilgiri and other producing regions move from being commodities to premium products with distinct identities.

According to industry leaders, the next phase of growth for the Indian tea industry will be driven not just by higher consumption but by greater appreciation for regional diversity and authenticity.

Consumers are looking for more than just a cup of tea
The premiumisation of tea is no longer limited to luxury stores or niche buyers. Consumers are increasingly exploring specialty blends, single-origin teas, wellness-focused products and regional varieties that offer unique flavours and stories.

“Premiumisation is often misunderstood as offering a more expensive product. In reality, it is about creating greater value for consumers,” Viren Shah, Chairman of Jivraj9 Tea Group. Shah believes premiumisation should not be seen simply as selling a more expensive product.

He noted that buyers today are looking for authenticity, craftsmanship and products that reflect their place of origin rather than choosing tea only on price.

Regional identity is becoming a selling point
India produces tea across several distinct regions, each known for its own climate, soil conditions and processing techniques. These differences create flavour profiles that are increasingly being highlighted by brands.

Assam teas are known for their strong, malty taste that suits traditional milk tea. Darjeeling continues to attract global attention for its lighter flavour and floral aroma, while Nilgiri teas are valued for their smooth taste and versatility in blends.Instead of blending teas into a uniform product, many companies are now showcasing their regional origins, allowing consumers to choose teas based on flavour preferences and brewing styles.

Shah said this diversity gives India a unique advantage. “Our tea heritage is incredibly diverse. Every producing region has developed its own character, flavour profile and brewing traditions over generations,” he said.

Changing lifestyles are expanding tea consumption
The evolution of premium tea also reflects broader changes in consumer behaviour. Tea is no longer limited to morning routines or evening breaks. It is becoming part of café menus, workplace meetings, travel experiences and wellness habits. Green teas, herbal infusions, flavoured blends and ready-to-drink formats are helping brands reach younger consumers who are open to experimenting.

This has encouraged tea companies to introduce products that cater to different occasions rather than relying only on traditional consumption patterns.

According to Shah, the industry’s next opportunity lies in creating new moments for tea rather than simply encouraging people to drink more cups every day.

Modern retail is reshaping the market
The way consumers buy tea has also changed significantly. Earlier, most purchases happened through neighbourhood grocery stores. Today, organised retail chains, e-commerce platforms and quick-commerce services have made premium teas more accessible across cities.

Consumers often discover new products through digital platforms, cafés, influencers and curated online collections before making a purchase. This wider visibility has allowed smaller regional brands to reach customers beyond their local markets.

At the same time, competition has increased, requiring companies to invest in better packaging, storytelling and product differentiation.

Global demand is creating fresh opportunities
Indian tea has long been recognised internationally, but much of that recognition has focused on production volumes.

Industry leaders now see an opportunity to build stronger consumer-facing brands that highlight India’s regional tea heritage. Around the world, buyers are showing greater interest in authentic, origin-led food and beverage products, creating room for premium Indian teas to stand out.

Rather than competing only on price, tea companies are increasingly focusing on quality, consistency and traceability to attract both domestic and overseas consumers.

    Innovation without losing tradition
Industry experts believe innovation will remain essential, but not at the cost of authenticity. For Shah, innovation extends beyond introducing new flavours. It includes understanding changing lifestyles, improving retail experiences and making tea relevant to modern consumers while preserving its heritage.

He believes companies that successfully combine traditional tea-making with changing consumer preferences will be better placed for long-term growth.

As more buyers seek products with a clear identity and a compelling story, India’s regional teas are finding new recognition. From the bold brews of Assam to the fragrant leaves of Nilgiri and the celebrated gardens of Darjeeling, regional origins are becoming an important part of what consumers value.

For the tea industry, that represents more than a marketing trend. It signals a shift towards quality, authenticity and differentiated experiences—one that could shape the next chapter of India’s tea market.
