Indiana Fever star Sophie Cunningham’s viral point during a game on June 22 became a meme on social media. However, the players’ union reportedly blocked the use of the image for business purposes.

According to sports journalist Darren Rovell on Monday, the WNBPA prohibited licensees from using Cunningham’s viral gesture, calling it “derogatory.” In an article, Front Office Sports’ Colin Salao confirmed Rovell’s report:

“The WNBPA did not deny Rovell’s report to Front Office Sports. ‘For licensed apparel, we generally do not feature or look to monetize player conduct from a confrontation between our members,’ a spokesperson said.”

Many fans on X reacted to the WNBPA’s decision. One fan mentioned Phoenix Mercury star Alyssa Thomas, who was involved in a much-discussed in-game incident with Cunningham’s teammate, Caitlin Clark.

“But AT trying to put CC, Phee, Candance and a host of other players in an Emergency Room is OK? Explain it to me like I’m 5,” one fan wrote.

@FOS But AT trying to put CC, Phee, Candance and a host of other players in an Emergency Room is OK? Explain it to me like I’m 5.

Another example of being an unserious league.

Others slammed the WNBA for not wanting to capitalize on Cunningham’s image, which has widely spread across different social media platforms.

Every single thing the WNBA does seems to be against their best interests. The most viral moment of the entire season and they are banning it.

@FOS Tell me you have no idea how to market your league without telling me

Cunningham’s viral pointing incident happened during Indiana’s 86-77 win over Phoenix on June 22. She and Mercury veteran DeWanna Bonner pointed at one another after they got into an altercation. Photos and videos of the incident quickly spread on social media.

Sophie Cunningham could still ‘monetize’ the viral meme

While the WNBPA will prohibit licensing agreements on Sophie Cunningham’s viral gesture, the Indiana Fever star could still negotiate with brands directly.

The WNBPA has an agreement with the players that it will negotiate licensing deals on their behalf. However, should the union disapprove of a deal, the players can directly license their name, image and likeness with the companies.

“Players are of course free to create and/or license their own product,” a union spokesperson told Front Office Sports’ Colin Salao on Monday.

The players’ union licensed partner brands include video game company 2K, JP Morgan Chase, L’Oreal Groupe, New Era and Funko.

Cunningham had used her viral point in different engagements. Most notably, in her appearance as a guest ring girl at UFC 329 on July 11, she pointed to the crowd.
